John 16 prepares the disciples for persecution, grief, and separation. Jesus explains that hostility will come because the world does not truly know God. Yet His departure is not loss — it is the pathway for the Holy Spirit to come.
The Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and will guide believers into truth. Jesus promises that their coming sorrow at His death will turn into unshakable joy after His resurrection. The chapter closes with assurance: though trouble is certain, Christ has overcome the world.
Jesus points directly to His death and resurrection. The image of birth pains foreshadows the cross leading to resurrection life. The promise of joy that cannot be taken reflects the victory secured through His overcoming of the world.

Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — Hard Days Ahead
He said, “I tell you this before
So you won’t stumble when it’s sore
They’ll cast you out — you’ll stand alone
Some will kill — and think they’ve done
A service unto God that day
Because they do not know His way
They do not know the Father’s heart
Nor see the One from whom I start”
Chorus — I Told You Now
I tell you now before it’s near
So when it comes — you’ll not fear
When darkness rises, hold this true
I spoke these things ahead for you
Verse 2 — It Is Better I Go
“I did not say this at the start
Because I walked with you, heart to heart
But now I go — and grief fills you
Yet what I say remains most true
It is better that I depart
For then the Helper will take part
If I don’t go — He will not come
But sent by Me — His work begun”
Verse 3 — The Spirit’s Work
“He’ll show the world where it has erred
Concerning sin — My truth unheard
Concerning right — I go above
Concerning judgment — evil judged
He’ll guide you into what is true
Not speaking from Himself — but through
What He receives — He will declare
Glorifying Me — making clear”
Chorus — Spirit of Truth
He will remind you what I’ve said
Bring light to words once dimly read
Not new truth — but deeper sight
Leading hearts into the light
Verse 4 — A Little While
“A little while — you won’t see Me
Then again — you surely will see”
They whispered low, unsure, afraid
“What does He mean by what He said?”
Jesus knew what filled their mind
He answered them, patient and kind
Verse 5 — Sorrow and Birth
“You will weep while others cheer
Your grief will feel both sharp and near
But like a woman’s labor pain
Joy will rise where tears have lain
When birth is done, the pain is past
New life makes sorrow never last”
Chorus —
You will see Me — and your heart
Will overflow — not torn apart
No one can take the joy I give
Resurrection joy — forever lived
Verse 6 — Ask in My Name
“In that day you’ll ask the Father
In My name — and He will answer
The Father loves you — this is sure
Because you’ve loved Me — faith secure
I came from Him — into this place
And now return — by sovereign grace”
Verse
They said, “Now we see clearly shown”
He said, “The hour comes — you’ll be alone
Scattered wide — each to his own
Yet I am not alone — the Father’s home”
Final
In this world you’ll face distress
But take heart still — don’t fear the press
I have overcome it all
The world’s loud voice will not stand tall
Outro
The night moved on — the words stood fast
Sorrow near — but joy to last
