John 12 marks the final public chapter of Jesus’ ministry. Worship, belief, and rejection all appear together. Mary’s costly devotion contrasts with Judas’ false concern. The crowd celebrates Jesus as King, yet misunderstands the nature of His kingdom.
Jesus declares that His hour has come. Through death, He will bring life. Though many witness His signs, unbelief remains. The chapter closes with Jesus’ last public call to walk in the light before darkness falls.
Jesus is revealed as the sacrificial King. Mary’s anointing prepares Him for burial. The triumphal entry points to a greater victory beyond the cross. The grain of wheat foreshadows resurrection life, and being “lifted up” points directly to crucifixion and salvation drawing all people.
John 12
Verse 1 —
Six days before the Passover came
They gathered near — Lazarus’ name
Martha served — the table set
Lazarus sat
Mary knelt with oil so rare
Poured it out — filled all the air
She wiped His feet with loosened hair
Love displayed without a care
Verse 2
Judas spoke with sharpened tone
“Why this waste?” his heart unknown
“Could’ve fed the poor instead”
Jesus said what must be said
“Leave her be — this she has done
For My burial — the coming one
The poor you’ll always have nearby
But I will not remain long by”
Chorus —
What is given freely shown
Love that sees what’s coming on
Worship poured before the grave
Honors Him who came
The crowd came out to see the sign
Lazarus —
The leaders saw belief arise
And plotted death before their eyes
Not Jesus only — plans were laid
But Lazarus too — truth betrayed
The next day crowds lined up the road
Palm branches raised — voices flowed
“Hosanna!” rang through David’s line
“Blessed is He — God’s chosen King!”
Riding low on borrowed beast
A donkey bore the Prince of Peace
The meaning missed — but later clear
When glory rose — the words drew near
Save us now — the cry was loud
The King stood meek before the crowd
Not crowned yet — but moving still
Toward a cross on heaven’s will
Some Greeks came with searching eyes
“We wish to see Him,” hope replied
Jesus said, “The hour is here
The Son of Man will soon appear
A grain must fall into the ground
Die first — then life will more abound
Who loves this life will lose its claim
Who follows Me must walk the same”
“My soul is troubled — yet I stand
This hour moves by Father’s hand
Father, glorify Your Name”
A voice replied — not one the same
“I have — and will again be shown”
Some heard thunder — some unknown
When I am lifted from the land
I will draw all hearts by hand
Light still shines — but time is near
Walk in it now — the night draws here
Though signs were many — hearts stayed sealed
Isaiah’s words were now revealed
They loved man’s praise more than the Lord
Their fear outweighed the living Word
Yet Jesus cried — one final call
Belief means trusting God through all
Final Chorus — The Light
I did not come to judge the world
But save it — light for every soul
Who sees Me sees the Father too
Reject the light — the truth stands true
Outro
The crowd grew thin — the hour stood
The cross lay straight before Him now
