Joel 1 opens with an unprecedented disaster described as a devastating locust plague that strips the land bare. The prophet calls all generations to witness and remember what has happened, emphasizing its historical and spiritual significance.
The destruction affects every layer of society — farmers, drunkards, priests, and even animals. Agriculture collapses, joy dries up, and worship at the temple ceases because there are no offerings left to bring. What appears as a natural catastrophe is presented as a divine wake-up call.
Joel uses the locust invasion to summon communal lament and repentance. The chapter does not yet explain the full reason for judgment but presses the urgency: God’s people must awaken, grieve, and cry out to the Lord before further judgment comes.
Joel 1 prepares the way for Christ by exposing humanity’s inability to sustain life, joy, or worship apart from God. The silence of the altar anticipates the need for a greater provision — one not dependent on crops or ritual.
The call to awaken and repent foreshadows Christ’s proclamation, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Where Joel reveals devastation, Christ later brings restoration and renewed worship.
Joel 1 — “Awake and Wail”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — The Word Comes
The word of the Lord came clear and true
To Joel, son of Pethuel
Hear this, elders — give ear, all who dwell
Has this ever happened… can you tell?
Tell it forward, speak it wide
From age to age, let none hide
What your eyes have seen today
Must not be lost… or fade away
Chorus — Never Seen Before
Has this been seen in former days?
A judgment that devours all our ways
What the locust leaves behind
Another comes — till nothing’s mine
Verse 2 — The Devourer
What the cutting locust spared
The swarming locust stripped and bared
What the swarming left undone
The hopping came — then ravaging one
Fields laid waste, the vine ashamed
The fig tree stripped, the bark laid plain
White branches stare beneath the sky
Joy itself begins to die
Chorus — Never Seen Before
Grain is gone, the wine runs dry
Oil fails before our eyes
The land mourns, the farmers cry
Because the harvest… passed them by
Verse 3 — Drunkards Awake
Wake up, drunkards — weep and wail
The sweet wine’s cut, your pleasure failed
It’s torn away from mouth and hand
A nation rose within the land
Strong and numberless they came
Lion’s teeth, destruction’s claim
My vine they crushed, My fig tree torn
Its bark stripped off — branches shorn
Bridge — Lament Like a Bride
Mourn like a virgin dressed in black
For the husband she’ll never get back
Grain and drink are gone from sight
The house of God stands empty tonight
Verse 4 — The House of the Lord
The priests lament, the altar grieves
No offering left for hands to weave
The fields lie ruined, seeds decay
Barns collapse — all swept away
The beasts groan loud, the herds perplexed
Pastures burn, confusion next
Even flocks bear guiltless pain
As fire consumes both hill and plain
Outro
To You, O Lord, I lift my cry
Fire devours, the waters dry
The day has come — the warning clear
Awake, repent… the Lord is near
