Job looks back with longing on the days before his suffering. God’s lamp shined on his path, his children surrounded him, and his influence was respected. Leaders listened to him, the poor found help through him, and the oppressed found justice. He was a man of compassion, generosity, and honor. Job believed he would die in peace, surrounded by blessing. This reflection shows not pride but grief. Job is mourning what he has lost—not only possessions, but dignity, community, and spiritual joy. This chapter teaches that suffering often includes deep emotional grief over the life that once was.
