The book opens by introducing Job as a deeply righteous man who fears God, avoids evil, and faithfully intercedes for his family. He is prosperous, honorable, and spiritually vigilant. In the heavenly realm, Satan (“the Accuser”) appears before God and challenges Job’s motives, insisting that Job loves God only because of blessings. God permits Satan to test Job, but with limits—Job’s life cannot be touched. In one day, Job loses his wealth, livestock, servants, and all ten of his children. Despite unimaginable grief, Job responds with worship, acknowledging God’s sovereignty: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.” Job does not blame God or sin with his lips. This chapter teaches that righteousness does not prevent suffering, that spiritual battles occur beyond human sight, and that true faith remains steady even when blessings disappear.
