Jeremiah 5 portrays God as a righteous judge actively searching for truth within Jerusalem. The chapter opens with a sobering challenge: if even one person who acts justly and seeks truth can be found, God would forgive the city. The search exposes a society saturated with religious language but devoid of genuine obedience.
God distinguishes neither the poor nor the powerful as innocent. Both common people and leaders alike have rejected discipline, hardened their hearts, and refused correction. Repeated warnings and refinements have failed to produce repentance. Sin is no longer hidden; it is shameless.
The chapter announces judgment through vivid imagery — predatory animals and a distant invading nation symbolize the inevitable consequences of rebellion. These judgments are not arbitrary but directly tied to Israel’s choices: serving false gods will lead to serving foreign powers.
False prophets and corrupt priests worsen the crisis by affirming lies and offering false peace. The most haunting indictment is that the people love it this way. Jeremiah 5 leaves the reader with a lingering question — not merely about judgment, but about mercy: Is there one who will still respond to truth?
Is There One?” — Jeremiah 5
Verse 1 — The Search for Truth
Run the streets, search every square
Look for someone just and fair
One who seeks the truth I give
One who walks the way I live
If you find but even one
I would spare what they’ve become
Yet though they swear My holy name
Their hearts are false, their vows a game
Chorus — The Verdict
Is there one who loves what’s right?
One who walks within My light?
They speak My name but break My law
They see My hand yet stand in awe
Of idols carved and words untrue
I searched for faith — I found so few
Verse 2 — Hardened Hearts
I thought, “Perhaps the poor don’t know
They’ve never learned My way to go”
But rulers broke the yoke I gave
They shattered truth, refused to stay
They would not bend, they would not turn
They would not blush, they would not learn
Though discipline had marked their road
They loved rebellion’s heavy load
Chorus — The Charge Repeated
Is there one who fears the Lord?
One who trembles at My word?
I struck them down, they felt no pain
I refined them, all in vain
Their faces harder than the stone
They would not come… they would not come
Bridge — Judgment Announced
So a lion waits along the way
A wolf at dusk, a watchful prey
A leopard near the city gate
For sins grown vast… for mercy late
I will bring a distant tongue
A nation strong, an ancient one
They’ll eat your harvest, sons and daughters
Leave your land with burning borders
Verse 3 — The Cause Revealed
This is why these things arrive
You traded Me for borrowed lives
As you served gods that could not save
So you will serve in foreign chains
Your prophets speak what ears desire
Your priests rule by their own fire
And still My people love it so
A crooked peace they choose to know
Final Chorus — The Question That Remains
Is there one who’ll turn and see?
Who will hear and answer Me?
Shall I not punish what is done?
Shall I not judge this faithless run?
Yet even now I ask again…
Is there one? …Is there one?
Outro — Unfinished Mercy
Though judgment stands at Judah’s door
My question echoes evermore
If truth should rise, if hearts would bend
I would yet… I would yet… defend
