Jeremiah 49 gathers a series of oracles against multiple nations, showing that God’s authority extends far beyond Judah. Ammon is judged for seizing Israel’s land and trusting false gods. Edom is condemned for pride, misplaced wisdom, and false security in mountain strongholds.
Damascus faces sudden collapse despite its reputation for strength and beauty. Kedar and Hazor, living in apparent peace and isolation, learn that distance and simplicity do not shield from divine judgment. Elam’s military power is shattered, and its people are scattered to the winds.
Yet the chapter ends with a surprising note of hope. For Elam, God promises restoration in days to come. Jeremiah 49 teaches that God judges nations for pride, injustice, and false security — but He remains sovereign, purposeful, and free to show mercy according to His will.
Jeremiah 49 — “The Lord Still Reigns”
Genre & Vibe: Prophetic folk / cinematic worship
Vibe: Steady, sober, authoritative, hopeful beneath judgment
Verse 1
To Ammon, to Edom, the proud ones who stand,
Who trusted their cities, their wisdom, their land
You said, “Who can reach us? Who can bring us low?”
But the Lord spoke thunder from heaven below
Your strongholds tremble, your boasts fall apart
No refuge is found from the truth of His heart
The nations have risen, the warning is clear
The Judge of all earth is drawing near
Chorus
The Lord still reigns, above every throne
No power stands when He speaks alone
Pride will fall, but His word remains
The Lord of hosts still reigns
Verse 2
Edom, your counsel has faded to dust
Your wisdom has failed, your strength turned to rust
Though you soar like eagles, high in the sky
From the cliffs of your nesting, you will come down
Disaster is coming, none can escape
Not thieves in the night, not harvesters late
For the Lord has uncovered what was once concealed
Every hidden stronghold revealed
Chorus
The Lord still reigns, above every throne
No power stands when He speaks alone
Pride will fall, but His word remains
The Lord of hosts still reigns
Verse 3
To Damascus, Kedar, to kingdoms afar
Fear shakes the nations like falling stars
Men melt in anguish, their courage undone
When the day of the Lord has begun
Yet hear this promise, whispered in pain
“I will restore you in days yet to come”
The same hand that scatters can gather again
The Sovereign Lord still reigns
Bridge
Leave your orphans — I will keep them alive
Trust Me, O widow — I see your cries
Though judgment comes like a consuming flame
Mercy still speaks in My name
Final Chorus
The Lord still reigns, above every throne
No power stands when He speaks alone
Nations shake, but His truth remains
The Lord of hosts still reigns
Outro
From east to west, His word is proclaimed
The Lord of hosts still reigns
