Jeremiah 48 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Jeremiah 48 is a long oracle of judgment against Moab, marked by both severity and sorrow. Moab is condemned for pride, self-reliance, and mockery of Israel. The imagery of wine left undisturbed captures Moab’s long-standing ease and complacency, which bred arrogance.

God announces a total shaking — cities fall, people flee, and national identity collapses. Yet unlike cold condemnation, this chapter is filled with divine lament. God expresses grief over Moab’s downfall, showing that judgment does not erase compassion.

The chapter closes with a surprising note of hope: “Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come.” Even nations judged for pride are not beyond God’s sovereign mercy.

Jeremiah 48 teaches that pride invites collapse, ease can dull repentance, and God’s justice is never separated from His sorrow — nor from His power to restore.

Moab’s Pride Brought Low” — Jeremiah 48

Verse 1 — The Fall Announced

Concerning Moab — hear the cry

Nebo is shamed, Kiriathaim denied

The fortress falls, the stronghold breaks

The boast of Moab now awakes

No more the praise, no more the song

In Heshbon plots are whispered wrong

“Come,” they say, “let Moab cease”

The nation stumbles… stripped of peace

Chorus — Pride Has a Day

Pride rises high, then meets its end

The boastful heart will always bend

What stands secure in human sight

Falls fast beneath the Lord’s true might

The name once feared, the strength once loud

Now bows in dust… before the crowd

Verse 2 — Flight and Fear

Flee, run fast, abandon ground

Cry out, let the news resound

From Zoar’s slope to Horonaim

The road is filled with grief and shame

Waters fail, the land grows bare

Trust is broken everywhere

You trusted wealth, you trusted might

But none can save you in this fight

Chorus — Broken Vessels

Moab was settled, undisturbed

Like wine unpoured, never stirred

So taste remained, the scent unchanged

But now the jar is tipped… rearranged

I send the pourers — they will spill

The vessels break… by sovereign will

Bridge — God’s Grief

My heart laments for Moab still

Like flutes that mourn with aching trill

I weep for Kir-heres’ gain

The harvest lost, the fruit in pain

Joy and gladness swept away

No songs of wine, no shouts of play

The Lord has spoken — laughter ends

Yet sorrow weeps… even when He bends

Verse 3 — From Pride to Silence

You said, “I am mighty, strong, and wise”

But terror comes before your eyes

Your young men fall, your warriors flee

The king has spoken — so shall be

Every head shaved, every beard torn

Every hand cut, sackcloth worn

From house to house, the mourning cries

A shattered jar… before their eyes

Chorus — The Horn Cut Off

The horn of Moab’s strength is gone

The arm once raised is broken down

You magnified yourself with pride

Against the Lord — you would not hide

Now drink the cup you proudly poured

And wallow low… says the Lord

Verse 4 — The Mocking Turned

You mocked when Israel fell in shame

Spoke with laughter, not with pain

Now others wag their heads at you

The scorn you gave… returns full view

The terror, pit, and snare appear

For all who live in Moab’s fear

Escape one — another waits

No door unguarded… no open gates

Final Chorus — Judgment and Mercy

Moab is crushed, her pride undone

Her boasting silenced, strength outrun

Yet hear the word beyond the end

I will restore her in the end

The Lord who strikes, the Lord who heals
