Jeremiah 46 opens the oracles against the nations by confronting Egypt, Judah’s long-trusted false refuge. The chapter centers on Egypt’s catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Carchemish, where Babylon decisively crushes Pharaoh Necho’s forces.
Egypt is portrayed as proud and confident, likened to the Nile overflowing its banks. Yet God reveals that Egypt’s strength, gods, mercenaries, and medicine cannot heal the wound He has inflicted. The defeat is not political accident but divine judgment.
The chapter ends with a striking contrast: while Egypt is humbled, Israel is reassured. God disciplines His people but does not destroy them. Jeremiah 46 teaches that world powers rise and fall at God’s command, and that security found outside Him will always fail.
Not by the Nile” — Jeremiah 46
Verse 1 — Prepare for Battle
Prepare the shield, advance the spear
Harness the horses, draw them near
Stand firm, you warriors dressed for war
Polish the lance — march out once more
But what is this? — they turn and flee
The mighty fall unexpectedly
Terror surrounds on every side
The swift can’t run, the strong can’t hide
Chorus — The Day Is the Lord’s
This is the day the Lord has made
A day of vengeance, debts repaid
Not Egypt’s strength, not chariot’s roar
Can stand when God declares the war
The sword devours till it is full
The Lord of Hosts… unshakable
Verse 2 — Carchemish Falls
By the river Euphrates’ stream
At Carchemish, Egypt’s broken dream
Pharaoh Necho’s armies stand
But fall beneath a greater hand
The Nile rose high like swelling pride
“I rise,” she said, “to cover wide”
Yet flood meets flood — the waters part
When judgment strikes the boastful heart
Chorus — Medicine That Fails
Go up to Gilead, seek your cure
Take balm — but healing is not sure
The wound is deep, beyond repair
No remedy can meet you there
The nations hear your shameful cry
Your warriors fall… one on the other lie
Bridge — False Confidence
Why trust in gods who cannot save?
Why boast in strength the Lord once gave?
Your troops are many, yet they fall
Because the Lord… has struck them all
Your mercenaries turn away
They do not stand in battle’s day
When God commands the ground to shake
Even hired strength… will break
Verse 3 — Egypt Becomes a Calf
Egypt is like a heifer fair
But slaughter comes from northern air
Her hired men, like fattened bulls
Stumble back when terror pulls
The sound is hiss, the serpent’s glide
As foes advance in forest wide
Axes flash, the trees come down
A countless host… surrounds the crown
Final Chorus — Fear Not, My Servant
But fear not, Jacob — hear My voice
Though nations fall by sovereign choice
I discipline, but not destroy
I guard My people still with joy
Egypt will fall, but Israel stands
Preserved by God’s redeeming hand
The Lord who shakes the earth in might
Keeps covenant… and guards the light
Outro — Measured Judgment
I will punish Egypt’s pride
Her gods, her kings, her trusted guide
Yet after days, she will remain
Reduced — but still within My plan
The Lord brings down, the Lord restores
All nations move… at His command
