Jeremiah 22 delivers God’s verdict against Judah’s kings. Standing at the palace gate, Jeremiah proclaims that kingship under God is conditional upon justice, righteousness, and protection of the vulnerable. Royal power without moral obedience is exposed as illegitimate.
The chapter names specific failures. King Shallum (Jehoahaz) is condemned to permanent exile. King Jehoiakim is indicted for exploitation, forced labor, and shedding innocent blood while constructing lavish palaces. God contrasts false kingship built on luxury with true kingship defined by justice — calling this knowing the Lord.
The chapter ends with a devastating word to Coniah (Jehoiachin). Though once like a signet ring to God, he is removed, exiled, and declared childless in terms of royal succession. This marks the collapse of Judah’s earthly monarchy.
Jeremiah 22 teaches that leadership is accountable to God. Authority exists to serve, not exploit. When justice is abandoned, even divinely appointed institutions fall — preparing the way for a future, righteous King not built on human pride.
Do What Is Right” — Jeremiah 22 (Shortened Version)
Verse 1 — The Call at the Palace
Go down to the palace, stand and say
Hear the word of the Lord today
King on David’s ancient throne
And all who pass these halls of stone
Do what is just, do what is right
Rescue the weak from violent might
Do not oppress, do not destroy
The stranger’s life, the orphan’s cry
Chorus — The Choice Before the Throne
If you obey the word I send
Kings will rise and rule again
Through these gates in honor pass
A line that stands, a reign that lasts
But if you will not hear My voice
This house will fall — you made the choice
Verse 2 — False Kingship Exposed
I swear this house will not endure
If justice here is not secure
Cedars fall and halls decay
Because My covenant was thrown away
Do not weep for those now gone
Weep for him who’s led along
Exile seals his crown and name
He will not see this land again
Chorus — What Knowing God Means
Is this not knowing Me? — the Lord
Justice lived, not wealth adored
Not cedar walls or royal show
But truth that lifts the weak and low
Blood and greed will strip the crown
Where justice falls, kings fall down
Verse 3 — The Final King Named
O Coniah, signet ring
Once held close — I break the thing
Cast away, your rule undone
No heir will sit, your reign is done
Write this man as childless now
No son will wear the royal crown
The throne of man has reached its end
Until a righteous King is sent
Final Chorus — The Verdict
Hear the word, O house of kings
Obedience is everything
Not power, wealth, or royal claim
But justice done in God’s own name
What builds a throne, what makes it stand
Is righteousness within the land
Outro — Echo at the Gate
The gate still stands, the word remains
Choose justice now — or choose the flames
The Lord has spoken, clear and plain
What builds a throne… or breaks a reign
