Jeremiah 20 reveals the inner life of a faithful prophet under extreme pressure. After being beaten and publicly humiliated by Pashhur, a temple official, Jeremiah delivers a word of judgment that renames Pashhur as a symbol of terror and exile. False spiritual authority is exposed and held accountable.
The chapter then opens Jeremiah’s heart. He accuses God of overpowering him with a calling he cannot escape. His words reveal the emotional cost of obedience — isolation, mockery, and constant threat. Jeremiah attempts to stop speaking, but God’s word proves irresistible, burning within him like fire.
The chapter is marked by emotional extremes. Jeremiah swings from confidence in God as a mighty defender to deep anguish over his own existence. This tension is not edited out of Scripture. It shows that faithfulness can coexist with despair, and that honest prayer includes both praise and lament.
Jeremiah 20 teaches that calling does not always bring comfort, but it does bring purpose. God’s word will be spoken — either through willing surrender or inner fire. The prophet stands as a witness that obedience may wound, but silence costs more.
Fire in My Bones” — Jeremiah 20
Verse 1 — The Blow and the Chains
Pashhur struck me for the word I spoke
Bound my feet, my hands in yoke
At the gate where truth should stand
I was shamed before the land
Morning came, the stocks were torn
The word returned like sharpened thorn
“You are not called by peace,” He said
“Terror on every side instead”
Chorus — The Name Spoken
You trusted lies and loved the sound
Now fear will hunt you all around
Your friends will fall before your eyes
Your house will taste captivity’s cry
Because you spoke what I did not send
Your peace will break — this is the end
Verse 2 — The Inner Struggle
You deceived me, Lord, I spoke
Your word burned hot, I bore the yoke
I said, “I will not speak again
I’ll hold my tongue, escape this pain”
But Your word was a fire inside
Shut in my bones, it would not hide
I grew weary holding still
I could not stop… I never will
Chorus — The Whispered Threats
I hear them say, “Denounce him now
Report his words, we’ll bring him down”
Even friends who watched my way
Wait for my fall from day to day
They say, “Perhaps he’ll slip in fear
Then we will triumph — he’ll be clear”
But truth stands firm though schemes abound
The fire speaks… it makes a sound
Bridge — Sudden Trust
But the Lord is with me like a warrior strong
My persecutors will not last long
They will stumble, not prevail
Their shame will stand, their plots will fail
O Lord who tests the heart and mind
You see the truth they leave behind
To You I give my cause and cry
Let justice rise before my eyes
Verse 3 — The Swing of the Soul
Sing to the Lord, praise His name
He rescues poor from violent flame
In one breath hope, the next despair
My soul is torn between the prayers
Cursed be the day my breath began
Why was I born to be this man?
Why did I come to see such grief
And spend my days in bitter teeth?
Final Chorus — Faith That Stays
Though sorrow grips my waking breath
And joy feels chased by looming death
Your word still lives, Your truth remains
It outlasts shame, it outlasts chains
I will speak though tears may come
The fire burns — I am not done
Outro — The Cost of Calling
Between the curse and praise I stand
Held by truth I didn’t plan
If silence kills and speaking scars
I choose the fire… I choose the scars
