Jeremiah 2 is a covenant lawsuit in which God recounts Israel’s history of unfaithfulness. God begins by remembering Israel’s early devotion — their willingness to follow Him in the wilderness — highlighting the intimacy that once defined their relationship. This makes their present betrayal all the more grievous.
The chapter exposes the irrationality of Israel’s sin. Unlike nations that remain loyal to powerless idols, Israel has abandoned the living God for broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Idolatry is shown not merely as religious error, but as spiritual adultery and self-destructive foolishness.
God also confronts Israel’s leaders, prophets, and priests for failing in their responsibilities. Political alliances, military strength, and foreign gods are all exposed as false sources of security. The chapter teaches that abandoning God always leads to loss, confusion, and shame — not because God withholds good, but because life apart from Him cannot sustain itself.
Broken Cisterns” — Jeremiah 2
Verse 1 — Remembered Love
I remember you in the wilderness days
When you followed Me through dust and flame
When you trusted Me with no roads paved
And no harvest in sight
You were Mine, the first of My yield
Holy ground, a promised field
Every hand that tried to steal
Felt My justice rise
Chorus — Covenant Betrayal
What fault did you ever find in Me?
That you wandered far from fidelity
You traded truth for empty sound
You chased the gods that can’t be found
You left the spring that makes you whole
For broken wells that hold no soul
Verse 2 — The Great Exchange
Your priests forgot to ask My name
Your shepherds led you into shame
Your prophets spoke in Baal’s refrain
And I was pushed aside
Across the seas, search far and wide
Has any nation changed their god?
Yet you exchanged your living God
For idols carved from lies
Chorus — The Great Exchange (Stronger)
What fault did you ever find in Me?
That you traded life for vanity
You drank from dust, not living streams
You bowed your knees to borrowed dreams
You left the spring that makes you whole
For broken wells that hold no soul
Bridge — God’s Legal Case
Be appalled, O heavens, stand amazed
Shudder at the price you’ve paid
Two great evils you have made
Hear the charge I bring
You turned away from living truth
You dug your wells with faithless tools
Cisterns cracked, they won’t hold you
I am the living spring
Verse 3 — Consequences & Confusion
What gain was found in foreign aid?
From Egypt’s streams or Assyria’s shade
Your own rebellion carved this blade
That cuts you to the bone
You ask, “Why has this happened here?”
But your unfaithfulness is clear
You walked away when I was near
And chose the dark alone
Final Chorus — Grief of God
What fault did you ever find in Me?
I gave you truth, you chose deceit
I fed you light, you loved the night
You ran from mercy into fright
Return again, don’t drink from stone
Come back to Me — you’re not alone
Outro — The Open Invitation
I am the spring that never dries
The faithful God you still deny
Yet even now My arms are wide
Come home… come home
