Jeremiah 17 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Jeremiah 17 presents a wisdom-style contrast at the heart of prophetic warning. The chapter exposes sin as deeply ingrained, engraved on the heart rather than merely practiced outwardly. Judah’s problem is not ignorance but misplaced trust.

God sets two paths before the people. Trust in human strength leads to barrenness and instability, while trust in the Lord produces resilience and fruitfulness even in times of drought. The imagery of the tree planted by water stands as one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of steadfast faith.

The chapter then reveals the deeper issue — the human heart itself. Deceitful and sick beyond cure, the heart cannot be trusted to lead rightly. Only God can search, test, and judge motives. Therefore, accountability and grace must come from Him alone.

Jeremiah closes with a personal prayer. Though mocked and threatened, the prophet anchors himself in God’s healing and salvation. Jeremiah 17 teaches that life is shaped not by circumstances but by where trust is placed — and that true stability comes from trusting the Lord who knows the heart.

The Heart and the Tree” — Jeremiah 17

Verse 1 — The Engraved Sin

The sin of Judah, carved in stone

With iron point, in hearts alone

Cut on the altar, written deep

Where secret vows refuse to sleep

Their children learn the ways of lies

Beside the hills where idols rise

Even memory bears the stain

Of broken trust and borrowed gain

Chorus — Cursed Trust

Cursed is the one who trusts in man

Who leans on flesh, not God’s own hand

Whose heart departs, though lips may pray

From living streams they turn away

They’ll be a shrub in desert land

No rain, no root, no hope to stand

Verse 2 — Blessed Trust

Blessed is the one who trusts the Lord

Whose hope is anchored in His word

They’ll be a tree by waters near

Roots unafraid when drought is here

When heat arrives, their leaf stays green

In years of lack, they’re still unseen

By fear that steals or dries the ground

Their fruit is found… their fruit is found

Chorus — The Great Divide

Two ways are set before the soul

One dries the heart, one makes it whole

One feeds on dust, one drinks from grace

One fears the heat, one stands its place

The path you choose will shape your days

Your trust decides your final way

Bridge — The Deceitful Heart

The heart is deceitful, sick and weak

Beyond all cure it longs to speak

Who can discern its hidden art?

Who truly knows the human heart?

“I search the heart,” the Lord replies

“I test the mind before My eyes

I give to each what they have sown

The fruit their secret ways have grown”

Verse 3 — False Gain Exposed

Like partridge hatching eggs not hers

So wealth unjust will not endure

Midway through life it slips away

At death, a fool — so truth will say

No throne of theft, no stolen name

Can shield the soul from earned disgrace

What’s gained apart from truth and fear

Will not remain when God draws near

Final Chorus — The Prayer of Trust

Heal me, O Lord, and I’ll be healed

Save me, Lord, my strength and shield

You are my praise, my hiding place

My hope secured in sovereign grace

Though scoffers laugh and threats surround

I stand on truth… on holy ground

Outro — The Tested Way

Let those who mock be put to shame

But not the one who trusts Your name

You are my refuge in the test

In You alone my heart finds rest
