Jeremiah 10 draws a sharp and necessary contrast between lifeless idols and the living God. The chapter exposes the absurdity of idol worship by describing how gods are fashioned by human hands, decorated to prevent them from falling, and carried because they cannot move themselves. These idols inspire fear, yet possess no power.
In contrast, the Lord is revealed as the Creator and Sustainer of all things. He made the earth, commands the skies, controls the rain and wind, and rules over the nations. His name is great in power and authority, and all creation responds to His voice.
The chapter also emphasizes accountability. Those who trust in idols will be put to shame when judgment comes, for their gods will not save them. Jeremiah responds not with pride, but humility, acknowledging that human life is not self-directed apart from God.
Jeremiah 10 teaches that true security is found only in knowing and revering the living God. False worship leads to emptiness and judgment, but humility before the Lord leads to correction shaped by mercy.
The Living God” — Jeremiah 10
Verse 1 — The Way of the Nations
Hear the word the Lord proclaims
Do not learn the nations’ ways
Do not fear the signs they fear
When heavens shake and stars appear
A tree is cut from forest ground
Worked by hands, shaped all around
Silver nailed so it won’t fall
Speechless wood — it hears no call
Chorus — The Great Contrast
Not like them, Lord — not like You
No one else is strong and true
Great is Your name, great in might
King of nations, God of light
All the earth in trembling stands
Nothing rivals Your command
Verse 2 — The Folly of Idols
They must be carried, cannot move
They cannot speak, they cannot prove
No breath of life, no guiding voice
No power to save, no power to choose
One hammer strikes, one craftsman plans
Another wraps with golden bands
But fear not gods that cannot stand
Nor do them harm — they’re dust and sand
Chorus — The Living God
But You are God who lives and reigns
Everlasting through the ages
At Your wrath the earth will shake
Nations fall for Your name’s sake
Heaven, earth, Your voice obeys
You alone formed all our days
Bridge — Creator Declared
You made the earth by power strong
Established worlds where they belong
You stretched the skies, You called the rain
Lightning splits the clouds again
You bring the winds from hidden store
You speak — creation asks no more
The idols fade, their makers too
But truth stands firm in what You do
Verse 3 — The Cost of Rebellion
Every man stands dull and blind
Ashamed by gods of his design
The molten image bears no breath
A lie that leads the soul to death
When judgment comes, they disappear
In time of wrath they are not here
They cannot help, they cannot stay
They vanish when the truth holds sway
Final Chorus — The Lord Alone
Not like them, Lord — not like You
No one else is living, true
Portion of Jacob, hope and song
To You all things rightly belong
Great is Your name in all the land
The living God — we understand
Outro — A Humble Prayer
I know, O Lord, the way of man
Is not secured by his own hand
Correct me, Lord, but not in rage
In measured truth, in mercy’s way
Pour wrath on those who do not know
Who would not let Your glory show
But teach my heart Your righteous road
That I may walk where You have trod.
