James identifies the root of conflict: desires at war within. External fights reflect internal disordered cravings. Friendship with worldly value systems becomes spiritual adultery — divided loyalty against God.
Yet grace is greater. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. James calls for repentance through active surrender: submit, resist, draw near, cleanse, grieve, humble.
He warns against judging others and against arrogant planning. Life is a mist. Plans must bow to the Lord’s will. Knowing the good without doing it is sin.
The heart must choose allegiance.
Jesus perfectly submitted to the Father’s will. He resisted the devil. He humbled Himself unto death. He never boasted in self-made plans. Christ embodies the surrendered life James calls us toward.
James 4 — “Draw Near”
James 4
Verse 1
Where do the wars and quarrels rise?
Not from the streets — but from inside.
Desires that battle in the chest,
Wanting more, refusing rest.
You crave and grasp yet still come short,
You fight and envy, still distort.
You ask, but ask with selfish aim —
To feed the fire, to fan your flame.
Chorus
Submit yourself to God above,
Resist the devil’s subtle shove.
Draw near and He will draw near too —
Let heaven’s mercy wash you new.
Verse 2
Friendship with the world’s embrace
Makes the heart a divided place.
Do you not know affection there
Makes you God’s opponent bare?
But greater grace is freely poured
To humble hearts before the Lord.
He lifts the low, the proud resists —
Pride and grace cannot coexist.
Pre-Chorus
Wash your hands and cleanse your mind,
Leave double-hearted ways behind.
Verse 3
Grieve the sin you once excused,
Let laughter turn when truth’s refused.
Humble low beneath His hand —
He will lift you, make you stand.
Do not speak against your kin,
Judging others places sin
On yourself, as though you stand
Above the law you can’t command.
Bridge
You say, “Tomorrow we will go,
Trade and prosper, wealth will flow.”
But you don’t know what one day brings —
Life’s a mist on fragile wings.
Instead say, “If the Lord should will,
We will move and we will build.”
Boasting plans without His say
Is empty breath that fades away.
Final Chorus
So draw near, lay striving down,
Trade your pride for mercy’s crown.
What you know and do not do —
That silence still condemns you.
Submit your heart, surrender all —
For grace stands ready when you call.
