James 3 — The Tongue and True Wisdom

James warns that teachers carry greater accountability. Speech shapes souls. The tongue, though small, steers lives like a rudder guides a ship. It can bless God and curse those made in His image — exposing a divided heart.

James reveals that speech flows from inner allegiance. A spring cannot produce both fresh and bitter water. The root problem is not vocabulary but the heart.

He then contrasts two kinds of wisdom. Earthly wisdom is marked by envy and selfish ambition, producing disorder. Wisdom from above is pure, peace-loving, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. True wisdom cultivates peace and righteousness.

Christ Foreshadowing Anchor

No deceit was found in Jesus’ mouth.
He is wisdom from above incarnate.
He spoke truth without malice and mercy without compromise.
Where human tongues ignite destruction, Christ’s words bring life.

James 3 — “Tamed or Untamed”

James 3

Verse 1

Not many should rush to teach,

For heavier judgment we will meet.

Words carry weight beyond their sound,

They rise like seeds in broken ground.

We all stumble in what we say,

Loose words can lead the heart astray.

But one who masters tongue and breath

Shows a faith alive, not death.

Chorus

A small spark sets a forest flame,

A careless word can scar a name.

The tongue — so small, yet wild and strong —

Can build what’s right or burn what’s wrong.

Verse 2

A bit in a horse’s mouth can steer,

A rudder turns a ship through fear.

Though winds may press and oceans roar,

Small guides decide the greater course.

So too the tongue, though small in size,

Boasts like thunder in the skies.

A restless fire, untamed inside,

Stains the soul with hidden pride.

Pre-Chorus

With it we bless our holy King,

With it we curse what He did bring.

Verse 3

From the same mouth praise and blame —

This should not be so the same.

Does fresh spring pour out bitter stream?

Does fig tree bear what’s not its seed?

The tongue no man can fully tame,

A restless evil, fierce in flame.

But what it speaks reveals the core —

What fills the heart comes pouring more.

Bridge — Two Wisdoms

Who is wise? Then let it show

By gentle deeds that mercy knows.

Not envy’s edge or selfish claim,

Not bitter rivalry for name.

Where envy lives and selfish rise,

Chaos grows and truth divides.

But wisdom from above is pure,

Peace-loving, gentle, firm, secure.

Full of mercy, fruit sincere,

Impartial, honest, crystal clear.

Peacemakers sow in righteous field —

A harvest heaven-formed revealed.

Final Chorus

Let my words be shaped by grace,

Not fire that leaves a scorched place.

Teach my tongue to serve the true —

Let heaven’s wisdom speak through you.

For what I say reveals my tree —

Lord, let my fruit look like Thee.
