Using the imagery of a vineyard, God describes His loving care for Israel and their failure to produce justice and righteousness. Instead, they yield oppression and bloodshed. Six woes pronounce judgment on greed, injustice, moral confusion, and arrogance.
The chapter ends with the certainty of divine judgment.
Christ is the true Vine who produces righteousness and restores what Israel failed to bear.
Isaiah 5 — “The Song of the Vineyard”
Song Lyrics
Verse 1
Let me sing of the One I love,
A vineyard planted with care above.
On fertile hill, with choicest ground,
He cleared the stones, a wall went round.
He dug the press, He built the tower,
Watched and waited for fruitful hours.
He looked for grapes, rich and sweet—
But only wild ones stained the field.
Chorus
What more could I have done for you?
When I looked for good, why bad came through?
I gave you light, I gave you law,
You gave Me pride and wounds and war.
Justice hoped for—blood instead,
Righteousness—but cries were said.
Verse 2
Now hear My word, O Judah’s land,
I’ll tear the hedge from what I planned.
No pruning knife, no guarding hand,
It falls to ruin by My command.
No rain will fall, the vines will dry,
What once was blessed will wither, die.
The vineyard is My people dear,
Israel, Judah—held so near.
Chorus
What more could I have done for you?
When I looked for good, why bad came through?
I gave you light, I gave you law,
You gave Me pride and wounds and war.
Justice hoped for—blood instead,
Righteousness—but cries were said.
Verse 3
Woe to those who add to gain,
House to house in greedy chains.
Woe to those who rise to drink,
Dull of heart, no time to think.
Woe to those who call wrong right,
Trade the dark in place of light.
Woe to pride and clever lies,
Woe to bribes and twisted ties.
Bridge
The Lord of hosts is lifted high,
Holy, holy before all eyes.
The humble feast, the proud are brought low,
Truth stands firm when illusions go.
Final Chorus
So learn the ways of holy fear,
Let justice live, let truth draw near.
The vineyard cries for fruit once more,
A faithful yield, not empty form.
The Holy One will judge the land—
Yet mercy waits at His command.
Outro
The Lord is holy, just, and true…
His vineyard still belongs to You.
