Judgment is declared against Damascus and Israel for trusting in alliances and idols rather than God. Though devastation is severe, a remnant remains who will turn back to the Lord.
Christ gathers the remnant who turn from false securities to trust fully in God.
Isaiah 17 — “When Glory Fades”
Song Lyrics
Verse 1
Behold, Damascus will be no more,
A city lost to time and war.
Ruined heaps where streets once ran,
The stronghold gone from Ephraim’s hand.
The kingdom’s shine will slip away,
Like morning mist that cannot stay.
What once was full now thins and bends,
The pride of man comes to its end.
Chorus
When glory fades and strength runs dry,
When idols fall and helpers die,
Remember not what hands have made—
Turn your eyes to God your aid.
In loss and dust, a truth remains:
The Lord alone sustains.
Verse 2
Like harvest fields stripped near and bare,
So will their wealth and strength compare.
Yet gleanings cling to olive tree,
A few remain by mercy’s plea.
Two or three on highest bough,
Four or five where fruit hangs now.
A remnant spared, a faithful few,
Held by grace, not what they do.
Chorus
When glory fades and strength runs dry,
When idols fall and helpers die,
Remember not what hands have made—
Turn your eyes to God your aid.
In loss and dust, a truth remains:
The Lord alone sustains.
Verse 3
In that day hearts will turn and see,
Their Maker, Lord of history.
No more they’ll trust the altars raised,
Or works their clever fingers shaped.
They’ll look away from sacred poles,
From sun-gods carved to soothe their souls.
At last they’ll seek the Holy One,
When borrowed strength is overrun.
Bridge
You planted pleasant foreign vines,
Trusted walls and battle lines.
But in the day of deepest pain,
The harvest yields no gain.
Final Chorus
O nations loud like rushing seas,
Your roar will fall on God’s decree.
At evening terror shakes the ground,
By morning light—no foe is found.
This is the fate of those who plunder,
Who trust in strength instead of wonder.
Outro
What fades was never meant to last…
The Lord alone outlives the past.
