Hebrews 5 — The True High Priest

This chapter explains what qualifies a high priest: chosen by God, able to sympathize, offering sacrifices for sin. Christ did not appoint Himself; the Father declared Him both Son (Psalm 2) and Priest forever (Psalm 110). Jesus prayed with loud cries and tears, learned obedience through suffering, and became fully qualified as the source of eternal salvation. The chapter ends with rebuke: believers should be mature teachers, not infants still dependent on milk. Growth is expected.

Hebrews 5 — “A Priest Appointed by God”

Hebrews 5

Verse 1

Every priest is chosen from men,

To stand before God on their behalf,

Bringing gifts and sacrifice

For sins that stain and hearts that crack.

He understands the weak and lost,

Because he feels that weakness too.

Before he speaks for others’ sins,

He must bring sacrifice for his own.

Pre-Chorus

No one takes this role alone,

No one claims it as his own.

God must call — as Aaron was —

Chosen by the Father’s voice.

Chorus

So Christ did not exalt Himself,

He did not crown His name alone.

The Father said, “You are My Son,”

And called Him to an eternal throne.

“A priest forever,” heaven said,

Not by law, not by descent —

But after Melchizedek’s line,

A different kind of covenant.

Verse 2

When Jesus walked in flesh and bone,

He prayed with cries and tears outgrown.

He asked the One who saves from death

And trusted Him with every breath.

Though He was Son, He chose obey —

Through suffering He learned the way.

Not that He sinned or had to change,

But proved obedience through pain.

Verse 3

And once complete in suffering’s test,

Fully qualified above the rest,

He became salvation’s source

For all who trust and stay the course.

But here we pause — the writer warns,

You should be teachers, grown and formed.

Instead you need the basics still,

Like infants fed on milk alone.

Bridge

Milk is for the young in faith,

Solid food for those who train

Their hearts to tell both right and wrong,

Discernment strengthened, steady, strong.

Final Chorus

A priest appointed, not self-made,

Through tears and trial obedience displayed.

Eternal Savior, strong and true —

But growth is now required of you.

Move beyond the shallow start,

Let maturity shape your heart.
