Haggai 2 addresses discouragement among the returned exiles as they compare their modest rebuilding efforts with Solomon’s former temple. God responds by calling them to courage, reminding them that His presence — not external splendor — defines true glory.
The chapter teaches that holiness does not spread automatically, but obedience does invite blessing. God marks a turning point: from the day the people resumed faithful work, blessing begins — even before visible results appear.
The final promise reaches beyond the immediate temple, pointing to a future shaking of nations and the establishment of lasting peace.
Haggai 2 points beyond the physical temple to a greater fulfillment. The promise that the latter glory will exceed the former finds its ultimate realization in Christ, who brings God’s presence not into a building, but into human hearts.
The shaking of heaven and earth anticipates the unshakable kingdom inaugurated through Jesus. Zerubbabel, the chosen signet, foreshadows Christ as the true heir of David — God’s chosen King.
Haggai 2 — The Latter Glory Will Be Greater
Verse 1 — The Discouragement
Who is left among you now
Who saw this house in former days?
How does it look to you tonight?
Does it seem like nothing by compare?
The work is small, the stones are few
The glory faded from the view
What once stood grand now feels diminished
A shadowed hope, unfinished
Chorus — Be Strong
Be strong, Zerubbabel
Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak
Be strong, all you people of the land
And work — for I am with you
Declares the Lord of Hosts
Verse 2 — The Promise
This is the covenant I made with you
When you came out from chains
My Spirit remains among you
So do not fear the days
The silver is Mine, the gold is Mine
Not measured by what eyes define
What seems so small in present sight
Is held within eternal might
Pre-Chorus
Do not fear what you cannot see
Trust what I have decreed
Chorus — Be Strong
Be strong, Zerubbabel
Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak
Be strong, all you people of the land
And work — for I am with you
Declares the Lord of Hosts
Verse 3 — Holy and Unholy
Ask the priests what the law declares
If holy meat touches bread
Does holiness pass through the touch?
They answered, “No,” they said
If one unclean by contact of death
Touches food — is it defiled?
“Yes,” they said — corruption spreads
Defilement multiplies
Bridge — The Turn
So is this people, so is this land
Work of their hands, offerings planned
Unclean until they turned their way
And set obedience in place
From this day on, mark it clear
Before stone met stone in fear
When My house was laid again
I changed the course — remember when
Verse 4 — Blessing Begins
You expected much — it came to less
You looked for gain — found emptiness
But now consider from this day
I will bless you — says the Lord
The seed is still within the barn
The vine, fig, olive not yet born
But from this moment, trust My word
The blessing has begun
Final Chorus — The Latter Glory
The latter glory of this house
Will be greater than the former
In this place I will grant peace
Declares the Lord of Hosts
I will shake the heavens and the earth
Kings and kingdoms all undone
I will establish what remains
What cannot be shaken
Outro — Chosen
On that day, Zerubbabel
My servant, chosen son
I will make you like a signet ring
For I have chosen you
Declares the Lord of Hosts
