Haggai 1 addresses a people who returned from exile but stalled in rebuilding God’s temple. While they focused on personal comfort and stability, God’s house remained neglected. The people claimed it was not the right time — yet their lives showed ongoing dissatisfaction and lack of blessing.
God calls them to examine the connection between misplaced priorities and unfulfilled labor. This is not punishment for its own sake, but a merciful wake-up call. When the people respond in obedience, God immediately reassures them of His presence.
The chapter emphasizes that God’s presence, not prosperity, is the true measure of blessing.
Haggai 1 points forward to Christ by redefining where God dwells. While the people were called to rebuild a physical temple, Jesus later reveals Himself as the true dwelling place of God among humanity.
The call to “consider your ways” prepares hearts for repentance — a central theme of Christ’s message. Obedience rooted in reverence becomes the pathway to restored fellowship with God.
Haggai 1 — Consider Your Ways
Verse 1 — The Excuse
This is what the people say:
“The time has not yet come
The time to rebuild the house of the Lord
There’s too much to be done”
So they dwell in paneled homes
While My house lies bare
Comfort built on careful delay
While worship waits in disrepair
Chorus — Consider Your Ways
Consider your ways
Look closely now
You’ve planted much, but harvested little somehow
You eat — not filled
You drink — still dry
You earn your wage
But it slips right by
Verse 2 — The Cost
You dress yourselves, but stay cold
Your labor brings no rest
You gather wealth with open hands
But it never seems to bless
The heavens hold their dew
The earth withholds its yield
Because My house lies desolate
While each of you builds your field
Pre-Chorus
This is not random — not by chance
It’s mercy calling you back
Chorus — Consider Your Ways
Consider your ways
Look closely now
You’ve planted much, but harvested little somehow
You eat — not filled
You drink — still dry
You earn your wage
But it slips right by
Verse 3 — The Call
Go up into the hills
Bring timber down
Build My house — let glory be found
That I may take delight in it
That I may be honored again
You looked for much — it came to less
I blew it away — consider this
Bridge — Why?
Why? Because My house still stands in ruin
While you run each to your own
You’ve worked hard — but missed the center
Left Me waiting, left alone
Verse 4 — The Turn
Then Zerubbabel stood
Joshua answered the call
The remnant listened to the voice of the Lord
And fear of God fell on them all
The Lord stirred spirit, heart, and hand
Work began upon the land
And the people rose — not strong, but willing
To obey instead of standing still
Final Chorus — The Promise
Consider your ways — and turn again
The Lord is with you — says Amen
Not by wealth or strength or ease
But obedience brings peace
Outro — With You
“I am with you,” declares the Lord
