Habakkuk 2 records God’s response to the prophet’s questions. Habakkuk waits expectantly, and God instructs him to write the vision clearly, emphasizing that divine purposes unfold in God’s timing — never late, never false.
The chapter contrasts two ways of living: pride, which relies on power and control, and righteousness, which lives by faith. God pronounces a series of woes against injustice, exploitation, violence, and idolatry, making clear that human arrogance will not endure.
The chapter culminates in a global promise: the earth will one day be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory. Until then, faith means trusting God’s word while waiting for its fulfillment.
Habakkuk 2 introduces one of Scripture’s most influential declarations: “The righteous will live by faith.” This truth becomes foundational in the New Testament, shaping the gospel message that righteousness comes through faith, not works or power.
Jesus embodies this faithfulness perfectly — trusting the Father’s will even when the vision required suffering before glory. Through Christ, the promise of Habakkuk 2 expands from waiting hope to living reality.
Habakkuk 2 — The Righteous Will Live by Faith
Verse 1 — On the Watchtower
I will stand upon my post
Set my feet upon the wall
I will watch to see what He will say
And how I should respond when I’m called
Stillness now — no rushing sound
Eyes fixed forward, firm, unbound
I wait for words I cannot see
But trust the One who speaks to me
Chorus — Write the Vision
Write the vision, make it plain
So a runner can carry the flame
Though it lingers, though it waits
It will not lie — it will not fade
For at the appointed time it will come
The vision stands — it will be done
Verse 2 — The Hinge
See the proud — their soul is bent
Crooked hearts, self-confident
They trust in strength, they rise by might
But cannot stand before the light
But the righteous — marked and known
Live by faith in God alone
Not by sight, not by control
But by trust that holds the soul
Pre-Chorus
What is lifted up will fall
What is humble stands through all
Chorus — Write the Vision
Write the vision, make it plain
So a runner can carry the flame
Though it lingers, though it waits
It will not lie — it will not fade
For at the appointed time it will come
The vision stands — it will be done
Verse 3 — Woe to the Proud
Woe to him who builds by theft
Who piles up what’s not his own
How long will creditors rise up
And take what he has sown?
Woe to blood-soaked cities built
On injustice, lies, and guilt
Woe to those who drink the weak
Stripping dignity from meek
Bridge — False Glory
What profit comes from carved stone?
From silent gods you made your own?
A teacher made of breathless clay
That cannot speak, cannot save
The cup you gave will come around
Your shame exposed before the crown
The Lord remembers every deed
No violence will go unseen
Verse 4 — The Earth Will Know
But the earth will be filled one day
With the knowledge of the Lord’s great name
As waters cover all the sea
So truth will reign eternally
The noise of idols fades to dust
All the earth waits — silent, hushed
The Lord is in His holy place
Let all the earth stand still in awe
Final Chorus — By Faith
The righteous live by faith alone
Not by what their eyes are shown
Though the vision seems delayed
Still we trust what God has said
He is faithful — just and true
All He’s promised He will do
Outro — Stillness
The Lord is in His holy temple.
Let all the earth keep silence before Him.
