Habakkuk 1 opens with an honest complaint. The prophet cries out against violence, injustice, and moral collapse within Judah, questioning why God appears silent.
God answers — but not as expected. Instead of removing corruption, He announces that He is raising the Babylonian empire to bring judgment. This solution creates a deeper crisis for Habakkuk, as Babylon is even more wicked than Judah.
The chapter ends without resolution. Habakkuk does not reject God, but he does not understand Him either. He chooses to wait — watching for an answer that has not yet come.
Habakkuk 1 reflects the tension of faith before understanding. It anticipates Christ in the cry, “How long?” — a question echoed by the suffering righteous throughout Scripture.
Jesus Himself enters this tension, bearing injustice without immediate vindication. The unanswered questions of Habakkuk prepare the way for a faith that trusts God before seeing the outcome.
Habakkuk 1 — How Long, O Lord?
Verse 1 — The Cry
How long, O Lord, must I cry out?
Violence fills the streets around
I call for help — You do not hear
I plead for justice — silence found
Why do You make me watch the wrong?
Why tolerate the proud and strong?
Destruction, strife, contention rise
The law grows weak, the truth now hides
Chorus — How Long?
How long, O Lord — will You delay?
How long before You make a way?
I cry for help, but still You seem
So far from what I see
Verse 2 — The World Upside Down
The wicked hem the righteous in
Justice bends, truth gives in
Right is twisted, wrong walks free
The guilty rule with certainty
You are holy, just, and true
Yet this is all my eyes can view
How can You see — and still remain?
How long, O Lord, will this sustain?
Pre-Chorus
I know Your name — I know Your ways
But nothing looks the same
Chorus — How Long?
How long, O Lord — will You delay?
How long before You make a way?
I cry for help, but still You seem
So far from what I see
Verse 3 — God Answers
Look among the nations — watch
Be utterly amazed
I am doing something in your days
You would not believe if told
I am raising up the ruthless ones
Swift and fierce — the Chaldeans
They march across the breadth of earth
To seize what is not theirs
Bridge — The Shock
They are feared, they are a law to themselves
Their strength their god — their pride upheld
Horses faster than wolves at night
Eagles diving for the fight
Kings are mocked, fortresses dust
They laugh at walls and place their trust
In power gained by ruthless hands
And sacrifice to what they’ve planned
Verse 4 — A New Problem
Are You not from everlasting, Lord?
My Holy One — we will not die
You raised them up to judge — I know
But how can purer eyes comply?
You cannot look on evil still
Yet You use those worse to do Your will
Why swallow up the just like prey?
Why let the wicked have their way?
Final Chorus — Unanswered
How long, O Lord — I wait and stand
Still holding fast to what I know
You are eternal, just, and true
Though nothing here feels so
Outro — Watching
I will stand upon my watch
I will wait and see
What You will say to me
