Genesis 5 traces the genealogy from Adam to Noah, revealing both the spread of humanity and the reality of death caused by sin. Each generation repeats the phrase, “and then he died,” echoing the consequence of disobedience from the garden. Yet in the midst of mortality, hope appears in Enoch, who “walked faithfully with God” and was taken to heaven without dying. The chapter shows that even in a fallen world, close fellowship with God is possible and brings life beyond death. It also points forward to Noah, whose name means “rest,” signaling that God’s plan for renewal is already unfolding.
