Genesis 36 lists the generations of Esau, also called Edom, showing his growth into a powerful nation. Though Esau is outside the covenant line, God fulfills His word by making him fruitful and prosperous. Kings arise in Edom even before Israel has one. This chapter reminds us that God is faithful to His promises—even to those not chosen for the covenant’s central role—and that His providence governs all nations. It also marks a transition as the narrative prepares to focus on Jacob’s descendants and the story of Joseph.
