Galatians 4 moves from doctrine to identity.
1️⃣ From Guardians to Sons
Under the law, God’s people were like minors under guardians (Gal. 4:1–3). The law restrained and instructed but did not grant full inheritance.
2️⃣ The Fullness of Time
Galatians 4:4–5 is central: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son… to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
Jesus was: • Born of woman (fully human) • Born under the law (fully obedient) • Sent to redeem and adopt
3️⃣ The Spirit Confirms Adoption
Believers receive the Spirit of His Son crying “Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6). This is relational intimacy — not legal fear.
4️⃣ Warning Against Returning to Bondage
Paul warns them not to return to legalistic observances as though they secure salvation (Gal. 4:9–11).
5️⃣ Allegory of Hagar and Sarah
Paul uses Abraham’s two sons (Gal. 4:21–31): • Hagar → Mount Sinai → slavery • Sarah → Promise → freedom
Believers belong to the line of promise, not slavery.
Core message: You are not slaves under law — you are adopted sons and heirs through Christ.
Christ redeems. Christ adopts. Christ secures inheritance.
Galatians 4 — From Slaves to Sons
📖 Song Lyrics
Before the fullness of the time,
We stood beneath the law’s long line.
Like children waiting for the day
When guardians would step away.
We knew the rules, we felt the weight,
Bound by fear and bound by fate.
Though heirs by promise, still confined,
Like servants in the Father’s line.
Chorus
But when the fullness of time had come,
God sent forth His only Son.
Born of woman, born beneath
The law that bound both you and me.
To redeem the slave, to break the chain,
To call us sons in Jesus’ name.
And now we cry from hearts set free —
“Abba, Father,” tenderly.
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit
Of His Son into your spirit.
Not distant law on stone engraved —
But living breath that calls you saved.
No longer slave to fear and night,
No earning love by human might.
An heir through God — adopted, known,
The Father claims you as His own.
Verse
But how can you turn back again
To weak and worthless ways of men?
Observing days and months and years
As if salvation walks in fear.
I labored for you not in vain —
Why wear once more religion’s chain?
Did you receive me as I came
Or now forget the grace I named?
You would have given eyes to me
When first you heard and tasted free.
Why count me now an enemy
For telling you the truth you see?
Bridge — Hagar & Sarah
Two sons were born — one slave, one free,
One by flesh, one promise decree.
Mount Sinai births the servant’s line,
But promise flows by grace divine.
Cast out the slave and what it brings —
We are not bound to lesser things.
Jerusalem above is free —
And she is mother unto thee.
Final Chorus
So stand as sons, not slaves in fear,
The promise lives — the Father’s near.
Through Christ we share the royal flame,
Adopted fully in His name.
Not by striving, not by plan —
But born again by God’s own hand.
