Enemies of Judah offer to help rebuild but are rejected because they do not worship God alone. In response, they oppose the work—intimidating the builders, bribing officials, and writing accusations to the kings of Persia. Under Artaxerxes, the enemies succeed temporarily, and the construction of the temple is halted.
Christ-Foreshadowing: The opposition to rebuilding mirrors the resistance Christ faced; yet God’s purposes cannot be stopped.
