A detailed list of returning exiles is recorded—over 42,000 people plus servants and singers. Families, priests, Levites, gatekeepers, and temple servants are organized by ancestry. Some could not prove their genealogy and were excluded from priestly service until inquiry could be made. When they arrive in Jerusalem, the people give offerings toward rebuilding the temple.
