Inspired by Ezra’s grief, the people confess their sin and agree to separate from unlawful marriages. A large assembly gathers in the rain, and leaders conduct a careful, case-by-case investigation over several months. Those involved make offerings for their guilt. The chapter closes with Israel taking difficult but necessary steps toward faithfulness and covenant purity.
Christ-Foreshadowing: The costly repentance of the people points to Christ, whose sacrifice accomplishes the full and perfect cleansing they—and we—ultimately need.
