Ezekiel sees a vision of divine judgment beginning at the temple. Six executioners are sent through the city, but one man clothed in linen is commanded to mark the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over the abominations committed in Jerusalem. These marked individuals are spared.
Judgment begins with the elders and spreads outward, emphasizing that accountability is greatest among spiritual leaders. God responds to Ezekiel’s intercession by affirming that the people’s guilt is complete and that His judgment is just. This chapter reveals that God distinguishes between those who silently participate in sin and those who are broken by it.
The mark of protection anticipates God’s sealing of His people — ultimately fulfilled in Christ, through whom believers are marked as His own and spared from final judgment.
Ezekiel 9
“Marked Before the Fall”
Verse 1
I heard Him cry with a voice so loud,
Calling judgment from the holy cloud.
Six men came from the upper gate,
Weapons drawn — the hour was late.
Pre-Chorus
One walked among them clothed in white,
With a writer’s kit at his side held tight.
The glory rose from the cherubim,
Moved to the threshold — the light grew dim.
Chorus
“Go through the city, mark each brow,
Of those who grieve for the sins they’ve found.
But spare no one who does not mourn,
For judgment starts where My house was formed.”
Verse 2
Begin at the elders, nearest Me,
Those who claimed to lead but refused to see.
Defile the courts, let bodies lie,
No pity now, the hour is nigh.
Pre-Chorus 2
I fell face down and I cried aloud,
“Will You destroy all those allowed?”
He said, “Their guilt has filled the land,
They said I do not see — I stand.”
Chorus
“Go through the city, mark each brow,
Of those who grieve for the sins they’ve found.
But spare no one who does not mourn,
For judgment starts where My house was formed.”
Bridge
The man returned with the ink-stained hand,
“My task is done — just as You planned.”
The mark was placed before the blade,
Mercy named before judgment stayed.
Outro / Anchor Line
The righteous grieved, the marked were known,
Judgment fell — but not alone.
God sees hearts, not just the crowd:
The mourners live, the proud bow down.
