God instructs Ezekiel to shave his head and beard, then divide the hair into three portions, each representing a different form of judgment on Jerusalem: fire, sword, and scattering. A small remnant is preserved, though even they undergo refining.
Jerusalem’s guilt is emphasized — she was placed at the center of the nations to reflect God’s ways but rebelled more than those around her. The severity of judgment reflects the seriousness of covenant betrayal. God’s actions demonstrate that His warnings are not empty; when His word is rejected, judgment follows.
The preserved remnant points forward to God’s faithfulness to save a people for Himself. This ultimately finds fulfillment in Christ, through whom judgment and mercy meet, and a refined people are gathered from every nation.
Ezekiel 5
“A Razor Drawn”
Verse 1
“Son of man, take a sharpened blade,
A barber’s razor, clean and laid.
Shave your head, your beard as well,
Weigh the hair — the sign will tell.”
Pre-Chorus
Divide it three by measured hand,
Each portion marked by My command.
This is the city set apart,
Now judged for breaking covenant heart.
Chorus
One third burned where the fire fell,
One third struck where the sword would dwell,
One third scattered to every land,
Chased by judgment at My hand.
Verse 2
A few strands bound and kept aside,
Tucked in the fold, preserved, alive.
Yet even some of these will fall,
Refined by flame — I test them all.
Pre-Chorus 2
Jerusalem stood at the nations’ gate,
Chosen to show My law and ways.
But she defied Me more than all,
Turned from truth, ignored My call.
Chorus
One third burned where the fire fell,
One third struck where the sword would dwell,
One third scattered to every land,
Chased by judgment at My hand.
Bridge
Fathers will eat, the children cry,
Horrors beneath an empty sky.
Famine, plague, the sword unleashed,
Because My word was treated least.
Outro / Anchor Line
I spoke in wrath, I carried it through,
So all may know My word is true.
Judgment came — severe and sure —
Yet mercy waits for hearts made pure.
