Ezekiel 34 condemns Israel’s leaders for failing in their responsibility as shepherds of God’s people. Instead of caring for the flock, they exploited them, neglecting the weak, the sick, and the lost. As a result, the people were scattered, vulnerable, and preyed upon. God declares that He Himself will intervene, removing these unfaithful shepherds and rescuing His sheep from their abuse.
The chapter then turns toward restoration. God promises to personally shepherd His people, gathering them from exile, healing their wounds, and providing safe pasture. He also declares that He will judge within the flock, correcting injustice between the strong and the weak. Finally, God promises to establish one shepherd from the line of David, under whom the people will live securely. The chapter emphasizes God’s care, justice, and faithfulness to His covenant, revealing His determination to restore what human leadership destroyed.
Ezekiel 34 directly anticipates Jesus Christ as the true Shepherd-King. God promises that He Himself will shepherd His people, yet also that one shepherd from David’s line will rule over them. This points forward to Christ, who fulfills both roles — God present with His people and the Davidic Shepherd who seeks the lost, binds the wounded, judges with righteousness, and brings lasting peace to the flock.
Ezekiel 34 — “The Lord, Our Shepherd”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — Woe to the Shepherds
The word of the Lord came unto me
Son of man, prophesy
Against the shepherds of the land
Who fed themselves, not the flock in hand
You ate the fat, you wore the wool
But left the weak and wounded full
The lost you did not seek or bind
You ruled with force, not heart or mind
Chorus
Woe to the shepherds who feed themselves
And scatter sheep across the hills
The Lord has seen, the Lord will act
He will reclaim what you attacked
Verse 2 — The Scattered Sheep
My sheep were scattered, left alone
Across the mountains, overthrown
No one searched, no one cared
They became prey, exposed and snared
So I am against the shepherds now
I take My flock from every hand
You will no longer feed yourselves
I rescue them — says the Lord of the land
Chorus
I will deliver My sheep from harm
They will no longer be your food
I will judge between sheep and sheep
Between the strong and the bruised
Verse 3 — The Lord Shepherds His Flock
I Myself will search them out
Bring them back from fear and drought
From every place where they were driven
I will bind the hurt, restore the living
I will feed them on the mountain high
With good pasture before My eye
The fat and strong I will bring low
Justice reigns where My sheep go
Verse 4 — One Shepherd, One King
I will set one shepherd over them
My servant David — ruling then
He will feed them, guard their way
A prince among them — says the Lord that day
I will make a covenant of peace
Wild beasts gone, fear will cease
Showers of blessing fall like rain
No more hunger, no more shame
Final Chorus — A Secure Flock
They will know I am their God
When bonds are broken, yokes unshod
No longer plundered, no longer afraid
A planted people, secure and stayed
Outro
They will know — when all is done
I am the Lord, their Holy One
