Ezekiel 32 presents two laments over Pharaoh and Egypt, portraying their fall as both a public humiliation and a descent into the realm of the dead. Pharaoh is first compared to a proud lion and a chaotic sea monster whose restless power disrupted the nations. God declares that He will trap, expose, and destroy Pharaoh, turning Egypt’s former glory into a spectacle of judgment that darkens the heavens and shocks the world. The fall of Egypt is meant to strike fear into other rulers, reminding them that their lives and kingdoms are fragile before the Lord.
The second lament describes Egypt’s descent into the pit, where Pharaoh joins other fallen nations already judged for their violence and pride. Once feared on the earth, Egypt now lies among the slain, finding grim consolation in the company of other defeated powers. The chapter emphasizes that worldly strength, terror, and reputation cannot prevent divine judgment. Egypt’s fate stands as a final reminder that God alone governs life, death, and the destiny of nations.
Ezekiel 32 foreshadows Christ by contrast. Pharaoh, once exalted and feared, is brought low and cast into death because of pride and violence. This anticipates Christ as the true King who does not exalt Himself, but humbles Himself unto death and is therefore raised by God rather than destroyed. Where Pharaoh descends to the pit in judgment, Christ enters death in obedience and emerges victorious, holding authority over the grave.
Ezekiel 32 — “A Lament for Pharaoh”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — The Fallen Lion
The word of the Lord came once again
Son of man, raise a lament
You were like a lion among the nations
Like a monster in the seas
You surged through waters with restless pride
Muddying rivers far and wide
But I will spread My net over you
With many peoples pulling you through
Chorus
You thought your power filled the deep
But you were watched while you would sleep
The Lord has spoken — the net is cast
Your days of terror will not last
Verse 2 — Slain and Exposed
I will cast you out upon the land
Leave you fallen where you stand
Birds of heaven feast on you
Beasts of earth are filled with you
Your blood will soak the mountain high
Flow through valleys, never dry
I will cover heaven, darken light
Sun and moon withdraw their sight
Chorus
When rulers fall and lights grow dim
The world will know — this comes from Him
The Lord of hosts, the Judge of all
Who lifts up kings and brings their fall
Verse 3 — Terror Among the Nations
When I scatter news of your defeat
Nations tremble at your seat
Kings will shudder at their throne
When they see what pride has sown
Each will fear for his own life
When My sword cuts through the strife
The day I strike, they’ll understand
No power stands against My hand
Verse 4 — Descent to the Pit
Son of man, raise Egypt’s cry
Down she goes — no reason why
To the depths of those long slain
She joins the fallen, marked by shame
Assyria’s there with all her host
Elam, Meshech, Tubal boast
Edom’s princes, Sidon’s might
All lie silenced out of sight
Final Chorus — Pharaoh’s End
Pharaoh sees them — all the slain
Comforted in shared domain
Once a terror on the land
Now undone by God’s command
Outro
This is Pharaoh — this his crowd
Thus declares the Lord Most High
