Ezekiel 3 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

God commands Ezekiel to eat the scroll, symbolizing that God’s word must be fully received and internalized before it is proclaimed. Though the message contains lament and judgment, it tastes sweet because it comes from God.

Ezekiel is warned that Israel will resist his message, but God strengthens him to endure rejection. He is appointed as a watchman, held accountable to warn the people faithfully. Silence in the face of sin brings guilt; obedience brings deliverance — regardless of the response.

Ezekiel’s seven days of silence reflect the weight of his calling and the seriousness of speaking on God’s behalf.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Ezekiel’s role as watchman points forward to Christ, who warns, calls to repentance, and bears responsibility for proclaiming truth — and to believers who are later called to faithfully carry God’s word to the world.

Ezekiel 3

“Eat the Scroll”

Verse 1

He said, “Son of man, take what I give,

Eat this scroll, then go and live.

Fill your heart with every word,

Then speak to Israel what you’ve heard.”

Pre-Chorus

I opened my mouth, I took it in,

A word of sorrow, a call to stand.

It tasted sweet upon my tongue,

Though heavy work had just begun.

Chorus

Eat the scroll, let truth go deep,

Carry the words you’re called to keep.

Speak what I say, don’t add or hide,

My word must live before it’s cried.

Verse 2

Not sent to nations of foreign speech,

But to My people — still out of reach.

If I had sent you far away,

They would have listened and obeyed.

Pre-Chorus 2

But Israel’s heart is hard and strong,

Stubborn in will, resisting long.

Yet I’ve made your forehead firm,

Unbroken by the stones they throw in turn.

Chorus

Eat the scroll, let truth go deep,

Carry the words you’re called to keep.

Speak what I say, don’t add or hide,

My word must live before it’s cried.

Bridge

The Spirit lifted, the glory came,

I heard the thunder of wings and flame.

By the river Chebar, stunned and still,

Seven days silent — bent to His will.

Watchman Section

“Son of man, hear this truth I say:

I’ve made you watchman from this day.

Warn the wicked, speak what’s right,

Their blood is yours if you stay silent.

But if you warn and they refuse,

Their guilt remains — you’ve paid your dues.

Speak My word, whether soft or loud,

Faithful voices honor God.”

Outro / Anchor Line

The word was eaten, the calling sealed,

A guarded mouth, a heart revealed.

Before I speak, I must obey —

The watchman listens, then warns God’s way.
