God recounts Israel’s long history of rebellion, beginning in Egypt, continuing through the wilderness, and extending into the present generation. Despite repeated disobedience, idolatry, and rejection of God’s laws — especially His Sabbaths — God repeatedly withheld total judgment.
The key refrain is “for My name’s sake.” God’s mercy is not based on Israel’s consistency, but on His own faithfulness and holiness. The chapter ends with a promise: God will regather His people, purge rebellion, and restore them — not because they deserve it, but because He is faithful to His name.
Ezekiel 20 points forward to Christ, through whom God ultimately upholds His name and fulfills His covenant. Jesus embodies God’s faithfulness, leading a redeemed people not out of Egypt, but out of sin — by grace, not merit.
Ezekiel 20
“For My Name’s Sake”
Verse 1
The elders came to ask once more,
To seek the Lord as days before.
But God replied, “I will not speak
To hearts that will not truly seek.”
Pre-Chorus
“Son of man, stand and testify,
Put their past before their eyes.
Let them see what’s always been —
A stubborn heart, repeated sin.”
Chorus
Yet for My name’s sake, I restrained My hand,
When judgment waited at command.
Again and again I made a way,
So My holy name would not decay.
They will know when all is done:
I am the Lord — the faithful One.
Verse 2 (Egypt)
I chose them there in Egypt’s land,
Lifted them out by mighty hand.
I gave them statutes, showed My way,
But they clung to idols anyway.
Pre-Chorus 2
I warned them then, I tested still,
They would not walk according to My will.
Yet I spared them — mercy stayed,
For My name’s sake, judgment delayed.
Chorus
Yet for My name’s sake, I restrained My hand,
When judgment waited at command.
Again and again I made a way,
So My holy name would not decay.
They will know when all is done:
I am the Lord — the faithful One.
Verse 3 (Wilderness)
In the desert I led them on,
Fire by night, cloud by dawn.
I gave them Sabbaths as a sign,
But they despised what was divine.
Bridge (Children)
Their children followed the same deceit,
Walking paths of restless feet.
I warned them too — but they refused,
The gift of mercy still misused.
Verse 4 (Present & Future)
Now scattered far among the lands,
Still lifting idols with their hands.
But I will bring them face to face,
In judgment mixed with saving grace.
Final Chorus (Hope Turn)
I will gather you from every place,
Purge rebellion, show My face.
You will loathe the paths you chose,
When mercy heals what judgment knows.
Then you will know — beyond the flame —
I am the Lord, faithful to My name.
Outro / Anchor Line
From Egypt’s chains to exile’s pain,
One truth through history remains:
Not by your faithfulness or claim,
But for My name — I saved your name.
