Ezekiel 18 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

God rejects the proverb that blamed children for their parents’ sins. Instead, He declares that each person is responsible for their own choices. Righteousness and wickedness are not inherited — they are lived out. A righteous parent does not save a wicked child, and a righteous child is not condemned by a wicked parent.

The chapter emphasizes God’s justice and mercy. If a wicked person turns away from sin, they will live. God does not delight in punishment but calls people to repentance and life. Ezekiel 18 corrects fatalism and invites personal transformation.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Ezekiel 18 prepares the way for the gospel by clarifying responsibility and repentance. Christ fulfills this call by offering forgiveness and new life to those who turn from sin and trust in God’s mercy.

Ezekiel 18

“The Soul Who Sins”

Verse 1

The word of the Lord came once again,

Challenging a proverb spoken then:

“The fathers ate sour grapes,” they say,

“And children’s teeth are set that way.”

Pre-Chorus

As surely as I live, declares the Lord,

This saying will be heard no more.

Every life belongs to Me,

Each soul stands in accountability.

Chorus

The soul who sins will surely die,

The righteous live, the just reply.

No borrowed blame, no hand-me-down,

Each heart stands on its chosen ground.

Turn and live — hear what I say,

I take no joy when souls turn away.

Verse 2

If a man is just and walks upright,

Turns from idols, chooses right,

Does no wrong, lifts no hand to steal,

That man will live — the word is real.

Pre-Chorus 2

But if his son rejects that way,

Sheds innocent blood, goes astray,

He will not live by what was done,

Each path is judged by what it’s chosen.

Chorus

The soul who sins will surely die,

The righteous live, the just reply.

No borrowed blame, no hand-me-down,

Each heart stands on its chosen ground.

Turn and live — hear what I say,

I take no joy when souls turn away.

Bridge

If the wicked turn from all their sin,

Leave the past, begin again,

None of the wrongs will be recalled,

Mercy answers when repentance calls.

Final Chorus (Hope)

Cast away the heart of stone,

Make a heart that’s fully grown.

Why would you choose the path of death?

I long to give you life and breath.

Outro / Anchor Line

I judge each one by what is true,

By the way they walk, the choices they choose.

Repent and live — the door is wide,

The Lord delights when hearts turn right.
