God compares Jerusalem to a vine branch. Unlike other wood, a vine has no practical use beyond bearing fruit. If it produces no fruit, it is not suitable for construction and is only good for burning. If it has already been scorched, it is even more useless.
The message is clear: Israel’s value lay not in status or position, but in faithfulness. Having failed to live out her calling, Jerusalem faces judgment. God’s words emphasize that privilege without obedience leads to accountability, not exemption.
This chapter anticipates Jesus’ teaching that He is the true vine and His followers are branches. Fruitfulness — not appearance or position — is the evidence of true life connected to God.
Ezekiel 15
“Only a Vine”
Verse 1
The word of the Lord came clear and plain,
“Son of man, hear Me explain:
What is a vine compared to wood?
Is it fit for use, is it any good?”
Pre-Chorus
Can you make a peg or shape a beam?
Can it bear a load or hold a seam?
If it’s not for fruit, then tell Me why
It should be spared when fires draw nigh.
Chorus
It’s only a vine, meant to bear fruit,
Not shaped for strength, not built to suit.
If it fails the purpose it was grown,
It’s fit for fire — and fire alone.
They will know when all is done:
I am the Lord, the Holy One.
Verse 2
If the fire has touched it on both ends,
And the middle’s charred — what then, my friend?
If it was useless when it was whole,
How much more now, burned and cold?
Pre-Chorus 2
So is the city I set apart,
Chosen once to reflect My heart.
Placed in the land, yet fruitless still,
Now facing judgment by My will.
Chorus
It’s only a vine, meant to bear fruit,
Not shaped for strength, not built to suit.
If it fails the purpose it was grown,
It’s fit for fire — and fire alone.
They will know when all is done:
I am the Lord, the Holy One.
Bridge
I set My face against the land,
Judgment moves at My command.
From fire to fire the warning goes,
Until the truth is fully known.
Outro / Anchor Line
A vine must live to bear what’s true,
Fruit reveals what roots can do.
When calling stands but faith is gone,
The fire speaks — and moves on.
