Ezekiel receives his prophetic calling while in exile by the River Chebar. Heaven opens, and he sees a vision revealing the mobile, sovereign glory of God — not confined to Jerusalem or the temple.
The four living creatures reflect God’s authority over all creation. The wheels within wheels show that God’s throne moves freely and purposefully across the earth. The throne above the expanse reveals God as reigning King, while the rainbow reminds us of His covenant mercy even in judgment.
This vision establishes Ezekiel’s message: God is still present, still holy, still reigning — even in exile.
The glory Ezekiel saw foreshadows the day when God’s presence would dwell among humanity — ultimately fulfilled when the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and finally when God’s glory fills the earth again in full restoration.
Ezekiel 1
“The Glory on the Storm”
Verse 1
By the river Chebar, in a foreign land,
Heaven tore open at God’s command.
A storm from the north, fire flashing bright,
Wind wrapped in glory, blazing with light.
Four living creatures, alive with flame,
Each bore a likeness yet none the same.
Pre-Chorus
Faces of lion, ox, man, and eagle wide,
Wings stretched upward, moving side by side.
They did not turn, they went straight ahead,
Led by the Spirit wherever He led.
Chorus
Holy glory, riding on the storm,
Fire and brilliance, power and form.
Wheels within wheels, eyes all around,
The living God on holy ground.
This is the glory Ezekiel saw,
The likeness of the presence of the Lord.
Verse 2
Beside the creatures the wheels appeared,
One within another, high and revered.
Full of eyes, awake and aware,
Rising and moving through earth and air.
When the creatures rose, the wheels did too,
For the Spirit moved them all as one through and through.
Pre-Chorus 2
Above them spread an expanse of awe,
Crystal like ice, filled with holy law.
Above the expanse a throne stood high,
Like sapphire stone against the sky.
Chorus
Holy glory, seated on the throne,
Fire below Him, light like stone.
Radiance shining, bow in the rain,
Brightness and mercy wrapped in flame.
This is the glory Ezekiel saw,
The likeness of the presence of the Lord.
Bridge
From waist above — blazing fire,
From waist below — radiant power.
Like a rainbow after rain,
Covenant light in holy flame.
Outro / Anchor Line
When Ezekiel saw it, he fell face down,
The weight of glory drove him to the ground.
This was the vision, fearful and pure:
The glory of the Lord forever endures.
