Exodus 1 opens with the descendants of Jacob flourishing in Egypt, fulfilling God’s promise to make them a great nation. Their growth alarms Pharaoh, who enslaves them and orders the death of every Hebrew baby boy. Yet amid cruelty, God’s hand preserves His people— the midwives fear God more than the king and protect the newborns. This chapter shows that no earthly power can stop God’s covenant plan. Even in suffering, God’s purposes advance, preparing the stage for deliverance through a child who will be born in defiance of tyranny.
