When Mordecai learns of the decree, he dons sackcloth and ashes, mourning publicly. Esther sends a messenger to inquire, and Mordecai urges her to intercede before the king. Esther hesitates, knowing anyone who approaches the king uninvited risks death. Mordecai’s famous reply pierces her fear: “Who knows if you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther responds with courage and faith. She requests that all Jews fast for three days, while she and her servants do likewise. Strengthened in resolve, she declares, “If I perish, I perish.”
This chapter reveals how God often works through ordinary yet courageous obedience. Esther’s fear turns into sacrificial faith, and God prepares to act through her willingness.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Esther’s willingness to risk her life on behalf of her people foreshadows Christ, who would willingly give His life to intercede for humanity.
