The king elevates Haman, a proud Agagite, above all the nobles. All are commanded to bow before him, but Mordecai refuses—out of covenant loyalty to God. Haman burns with fury and seeks not only to punish Mordecai but to exterminate his entire people, the Jews. Casting lots (purim), he chooses the date for their destruction and convinces the king to sign a decree allowing genocide throughout the empire.
Panic spreads among the Jews as the decree goes out. Yet chapter 3 reveals that God’s people, though scattered and vulnerable, are never beyond His sovereign care. The evil intentions of powerful men cannot override God’s covenant promises.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Haman’s plot foreshadows the enemy’s desire to destroy God’s people, but it also anticipates Christ—the promised Savior who would come from this threatened Jewish line and conquer every scheme of darkness.
