Ecclesiastes 9 — “Time, Chance, and the Gift of Today”

I laid it all out before my eyes,

The righteous, the wise, their deeds, their lives.

All rest alike in God’s own hand,

Yet none can see how days are planned.

Love and hate both lie ahead,

No sign is given till paths are tread.

The same end waits for great and small,

One fate moves silently toward us all.

The living still hope, the living still breathe,

Better a dog alive than lions beneath.

For the living know their days will end,

The dead know nothing when life is spent.

So teach my heart while breath is mine,

To live today, not curse the time.

Their striving, finished, fully done.

So go and eat with thankful cheer,

Time and chance disrupt the scene.

A sudden net, a hidden snare,

We’re caught unaware, unaware.

Our days fall fast like birds in flight,

So I will fear the Lord and live,

Receive the day He chooses to give.

Not every strong or brilliant win,

But grace still moves through fragile men.
