Deuteronomy opens with Moses reminding the new generation of Israel’s journey from Horeb to the edge of the Promised Land. God had commanded them to go in and possess the land, yet fear overtook their faith when the spies brought back a discouraging report. The people rebelled and refused to trust God’s promise, causing an entire generation to miss the inheritance God prepared. Moses emphasizes that God carried them “as a father carries his son,” even through their unbelief. This chapter teaches that unbelief can delay God’s blessings, but His faithful care never stops.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Jesus is the faithful Son who fully trusted the Father and leads His people into their true inheritance.
