Daniel 4 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Daniel 4 is Nebuchadnezzar’s personal testimony of God’s sovereignty and mercy. After receiving a warning dream about a great tree cut down, the king is given time to repent. When pride overtakes him, judgment falls, and he is humbled for a season. At the appointed time, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledges the Most High, his sanity is restored, and he praises God. The chapter teaches that God alone rules over human authority and humbles the proud.

Christ-Foreshadowing

The humbling and restoration of the king anticipates Christ’s teaching that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. It points forward to the true King whose kingdom is everlasting and whose rule is marked by humility and righteousness.

Full Song Lyrics

Verse 1 — A King’s Proclamation

To all the peoples, far and wide,

The king sent word of power and pride.

“I’ll tell the signs the Most High gave,

The wonders shown, the life He saved.”

Peace was mine in palace strong,

Prosperity seemed sure and long.

Yet in my rest a vision came,

A dream that filled my heart with shame.

Verse 2 — The Great Tree

I saw a tree rise tall and vast,

Its roots ran deep, its shade held fast.

It fed the earth, gave shelter wide,

All living things beneath it thrived.

Then a watcher from heaven cried,

“Cut it down, strip branches aside!

But leave the stump in iron bound,

Till times have passed upon the ground.”

Chorus — The Most High Rules

The Most High rules the realms of men,

He gives and takes, then gives again.

Kings may rise and kingdoms fall,

But God alone stands over all.

Verse 3 — Daniel’s Warning

Daniel stood with troubled face,

Knowing judgment, knowing grace.

“O king, let this dream fall on foes,

For what it means — my heart well knows.

You are the tree, grown proud and strong,

Your reach has spread the whole world long.

Turn from pride, show mercy now,

Perhaps the Lord will stay the blow.”

Chorus — The Most High Rules

The Most High rules the realms of men,

He gives and takes, then gives again.

Kings may rise and kingdoms fall,

But God alone stands over all.

Verse 4 — Pride and Fall

Twelve months passed, the warning stood,

Yet pride still walked where humility should.

“Is this not Babylon I made?”

The king declared in glory’s shade.

The word had scarcely left his tongue

When judgment fell, the sentence rung.

His mind was lost, his throne removed,

He lived like beasts, by dew baptized.

Bridge — Times Fulfilled

Seasons passed as heaven decreed,

Until his eyes were lifted freed.

He praised the Lord, his mind restored,

Acknowledged God — eternal Lord.

Outro — Restored Praise

Now honor, glory, praise I bring

To heaven’s everlasting King.

His works are right, His ways are true,

He humbles those who walk in pride —

And lifts the low… in mercy new.
