Amos 7 introduces a series of visions revealing the nearness of judgment. The first two visions — locusts and fire — are stayed by Amos’s intercession. God responds to prayer with mercy, demonstrating patience and compassion.
The third vision marks a turning point. God sets a plumb line, symbolizing His fixed standard of righteousness. Israel is found crooked, and judgment is no longer delayed. The high places and royal house are marked for destruction.
The chapter then shifts from vision to confrontation. Amaziah, priest of Bethel, accuses Amos of treason and orders him to leave. Amos responds with humility and authority, declaring that his calling came directly from God, not from institutional religion. The chapter closes with a personal judgment against Amaziah, reinforcing the seriousness of rejecting God’s word.
Amos 7 foreshadows Christ as the One who perfectly meets God’s standard — the true plumb line. Where Israel fails the measure, Christ stands upright, fulfilling righteousness completely.
The rejection of Amos by religious authorities anticipates the rejection of Christ, who likewise spoke God’s truth without institutional approval and faced opposition for confronting corruption.
Amos 7 — “The Plumb Line”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — The Locusts
The Lord revealed what was to be
A swarm prepared, devouring free
When harvest’s second growth had come
The locusts rose — the land undone
I cried aloud, “O Lord, forgive!
How can Jacob stand and live?
He’s far too small, too weak to stay”
The Lord relented — turned away
Chorus — The Intercession
The prophet pleads, the judgment waits
Mercy pauses… at the gate
When prayer ascends, compassion hears
The warning stands… but not this year
Verse 2 — The Fire
The Lord showed fire that burned the deep
Consumed the land — no rest, no sleep
Again I cried, “O Lord, please cease!
How can Jacob stand in peace?”
The Lord relented once again
The fire withdrew — restrained by Him
Chorus — The Intercession
Twice the cry, twice mercy shown
Judgment held… by prayer alone
But patience strains, the measure near
The next decree… will not defer
Verse 3 — The Plumb Line
Then the Lord stood firm beside the wall
A plumb line held — the final call
He said, “What do you see, My seer?”
“A plumb line, Lord” — the truth was clear
“I’ll measure Israel straight and true
No passing by — no mercy due
The high places torn, the sanctuaries fall
The sword will rise… on Jeroboam’s hall”
Bridge — No Turning Back
No plea now halts what’s rightly weighed
The crooked line… cannot be saved
What once was spared must now be shown
Judgment falls… by standard known
Verse 4 — The Priest’s Accusation
Then Amaziah sent his word
To Jeroboam, Israel’s lord
“Amos conspires against the throne
His words cannot be overthrown
The land can’t bear what he proclaims
Exile, sword — and royal shame”
He said to me, “O seer, flee!
Go earn your bread — but not with me
This is the king’s sanctuary ground
The temple where his rule is crowned”
Verse 5 — Amos Responds
I was no prophet trained or paid
No prophet’s son, no guild I made
A shepherd was I, tending sheep
A dresser of figs… in fields so deep
But the Lord took hold, He sent my voice
“Go prophesy” — I had no choice
Verse 6 — The Verdict
Now hear the word you tried to seal
The judgment God has made revealed
Your wife will fall, your sons will die
Your land divided — measured dry
You’ll die in exile, far from home
And Israel surely… overthrown
Outro
Mercy paused, the line was drawn
The plumb line fell… the grace withdrawn
When truth is measured, crooked stands
The Lord has spoken… by His hand
