Amos 1 opens with the Lord roaring from Zion, announcing judgment that begins not with Israel, but with the surrounding nations. Each oracle follows a repeated formula — “for three transgressions, and for four” — emphasizing that sin has exceeded its limit.
God judges nations for extreme cruelty, violence, human trafficking, betrayal of covenants, and unchecked vengeance. Damascus is condemned for brutality, Gaza and Tyre for selling captives, Edom for relentless hatred, and Ammon for horrific acts committed to expand territory.
The pattern creates rising tension. As judgment moves closer geographically, the audience is drawn in — unaware that the same standard will soon be applied to Israel itself. Amos 1 establishes a central truth: God is sovereign over all nations and holds every people accountable.
Amos 1 anticipates Christ as the righteous Judge of all the earth, whose authority extends beyond borders, cultures, and covenants. The roar from Zion foreshadows the final judgment entrusted to Christ.
At the same time, the exposure of human cruelty underscores humanity’s need for a Savior — one who would bear judgment and establish true justice through righteousness and mercy.
Amos 1 — “For Three Sins… and for Four”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — The Shepherd Called
The words of Amos, shepherd strong
From Tekoa’s fields where sheep belong
In days of kings, when thrones stood tall
The Lord roared loud… to judge them all
From Zion’s height His thunder came
Jerusalem echoed His holy flame
Pastures dried, the Carmel crown
Withered low… before His sound
Chorus — The Roar
The Lord roars out, the earth responds
No sin escapes, no nation bonds
For three transgressions — even four
The Judge has come… to settle score
Verse 2 — Damascus
For Damascus’ sins, I will not turn
They threshed Gilead till the stones would burn
With iron teeth they crushed the land
Mercy gone by violent hand
I’ll send a fire through Hazael’s gate
Ben-hadad’s strongholds meet their fate
The bars will break, the power fall
To Kir they go — exile calls
Chorus — The Roar
For three sins — and for four more
The verdict stands, the fire pours
Cruelty weighed, the balance set
No nation leaves… without its debt
Verse 3 — Gaza
For Gaza’s crimes, I will not stay
They sold whole towns, gave souls away
Delivered captives, chained in pain
To Edom’s hand — for shameful gain
So fire will rise on Gaza’s wall
Ashkelon’s rulers doomed to fall
Ashdod’s power cut off clean
Ekron’s remnant… no longer seen
Verse 4 — Tyre
For Tyre’s guilt, the charge is clear
They broke the bond of brother dear
They sold the captives, forgot the vow
Covenant shattered — then and now
Fire will burn their fortress strong
The island’s pride will not last long
Chorus — The Roar
No walls stand firm, no trade secure
When covenant crimes endure
The Judge of all remembers still
Every pact… betrayed by will
Verse 5 — Edom
For Edom’s rage that would not cease
They chased their kin, denied all peace
With sword they struck, with wrath pursued
Their anger burned… never subdued
So fire will fall on Teman’s height
Bozrah consumed in judgment’s light
Verse 6 — Ammon
For Ammon’s sins, grotesque and grim
They ripped the wombs of Gilead’s kin
To widen borders, gain the land
By blood and terror… lawless plan
I’ll light the walls of Rabbah’s gate
With shouts of war, a storm of fate
Their king will go, his princes too
No throne remains… no power true
Outro
The circle tightens, the roar resounds
Judgment marches… nation by nation found
The Lord has spoken — the fire is sworn
For three sins more… and then the fourth was born
