Acts 6 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Acts 7 records Stephen’s defense before the Sanhedrin and his martyrdom.

Stephen recounts Israel’s history to show a consistent pattern:
God sends deliverers → the people reject them.

He traces:

  • Abraham called from Mesopotamia
• Joseph rejected by his brothers yet later exalted
• Seventy-five persons entering Egypt
• Moses rejected by Israel before becoming their deliverer
• The burning bush encounter
• The Exodus and wilderness rebellion
• The golden calf idolatry
• Rejection and persecution of prophets

Stephen declares that Israel has repeated this pattern by rejecting and betraying “the Righteous One” (Jesus).

He accuses the council of being “stiff-necked” and resisting the Holy Spirit.

He sees a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
The council stones him.
Stephen prays for forgiveness for his executioners.
Saul approves the execution.

Theme:
Rejection of God’s messengers culminates in rejecting Christ.

Christ-Foreshadowing (Acts Lens)

Acts 7 reveals Christ as:

  • The Righteous One foretold by the prophets
• The Prophet like Moses
• The rejected yet exalted Deliverer (like Joseph)
• The Son of Man standing at God’s right hand

Stephen mirrors Christ in forgiving his killers.

You Always Resist”

The God of glory called our father

Abraham from distant land,

Promised him a holy nation,

Yet gave no portion in his hand.

Isaac born and covenant given,

Jacob and the tribes begun,

But Joseph’s brothers sold him captive —

God was with the chosen son.

Through his suffering God preserved them,

Raised him ruler in the land,

Famine drove our fathers downward,

Seventy-five by God’s command.

Years increased and Pharaoh rose

Who did not know what God had done.

Our people groaned beneath oppression,

Until the birth of Moses’ son.

Drawn from water, trained in Egypt,

Strong in word and mighty deed,

Yet rejected by his brothers

When he rose to intercede.

He fled away to Midian’s desert,

Forty years in shepherd’s care,

Till the Lord in flame of fire

Met him at the bush there.

“I am God of your fathers —

Take your sandals from your feet.”

Sent to bring our people outward,

Signs and wonders made complete.

Through the sea and through the wilderness

Moses led with lifted rod,

Spoke of One to come among us —

“Like me, hear Him,” said our God.

Yet our fathers would not follow,

Turned their hearts to Egypt’s way,

Made a calf and worshiped idols,

Pushed the Living God away.

Prophets sent were persecuted,

Those who spoke of Righteous One,

And you now have betrayed and murdered

God’s own long-awaited Son.

You received the Law by angels,

Yet you would not keep it whole —

You stiff-necked and hard in spirit,

Always resisting God’s control.

When they heard, their rage ignited,

Teeth were grinding in their hate.

Stephen, full of Holy Spirit,

Saw the heavens open straight.

“I see Jesus standing glorious

At the Father’s mighty side!”

They rushed forward, stopped their hearing,

Dragged him out of town to die.

Stones were thrown, yet he was praying,

“Lord receive my spirit here.

Do not hold this sin against them.”

Falling down without a fear.

Saul stood there approving judgment,

Watching garments laid aside.

Thus the first of martyrs entered

Glory with his risen Guide.

Refrain

History testifies the same:

You resist — yet God proclaims.

The Righteous One has come —

And He stands alive.
