I Appeal to Caesar”

Festus came to take his seat,

Three days passed, then to Jerusalem’s streets.

The chief priests pressed their case once more,

Asking Paul be brought before

Their council — yet with secret plan

To kill him on the road by hand.

Festus answered, “He remains

In Caesarea under chains.

Let your leaders travel there —

If there is wrong, accuse him fair.”

When they stood before the court,

Many charges they brought forth —

Serious claims they could not prove,

Against the faith he would not move.

Paul declared with steady voice,

“I have broken neither choice

Of Jewish Law nor temple wall,

Nor sinned against the throne at all.”

Festus, seeking favor still,

Asked if he would face their will

In Jerusalem’s court once more.

Paul replied before them all:

“I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat,

Where I am bound in chains complete.

If I deserve to die, I will —

But if no truth in what they tell,

No one may hand me over thus —

I appeal to Caesar’s trust.”

Festus conferred and answered plain,

“To Caesar you shall now remain.”

Chorus

I appeal to Caesar’s throne,

Yet serve a greater King alone.

Through court and chain, through ruler’s hand,

The risen Lord’s unshaken stand.

Soon King Agrippa came in state,

With Bernice in royal weight.

Festus laid before his ear

The puzzling case he held so near:

“The Jews demand that he must die,

Yet I have found no cause why.

They argue over their own creed,

About one Jesus, once deceased,

Whom Paul affirms is now alive.

He has appealed — to Caesar’s side.”

Agrippa said, “I’d hear this man.”

Festus answered, “Tomorrow then.”

In pomp they entered judgment hall,

With tribunes and commanders tall.

Paul was brought before their sight —

The case would soon unfold in light.

Chorus

Before the kings, before the great,

Christ is spoken without debate.

From prison floor to palace room,

The resurrection still resumes.
