Christ-Foreshadowing (Acts Lens)

Christ is revealed as:

  • The true God — not one among many
• The rejected yet living Servant
• The risen One whose mission survives violence
• The King whose Kingdom comes through tribulation
• The Lord building structured, enduring churches

Through Many Tribulations”

In Iconium they entered in,

Spoke so boldly of their King,

Jews and Greeks believed the Word,

Signs and wonders then occurred.

Yet unbelieving hearts arose,

Stirred division, fueled their foes.

A plot was formed to stone them there —

They fled to Lystra in prayer.

In Lystra sat a crippled man,

Lame from birth, unable to stand.

Paul looked close and saw his faith,

“Stand upright upon your feet!”

He leapt and walked before them all —

The crowd cried out in pagan call:

“The gods have come in human frame!”

They called Barnabas Zeus by name,

Paul was Hermes, chief in speech,

Garlands brought and bulls to preach.

The priest of Zeus stood at the gate,

Ready sacrifice to make.

Tearing robes, they rushed inside,

“Men, why do you glorify?

We are mortals just like you —

Turn from idols false and mute.

The living God made sky and sea,

Gave you rain and fruitful tree.

Though past generations strayed,

He still showed kindness day by day.”

Even so they barely restrained

The crowds from worshiping their name.

From Antioch and Iconium

Came the Jews with fury drawn.

They stoned Paul and dragged him out,

Thinking death had come about.

But as disciples gathered near,

He rose again without a fear.

Next day on to Derbe’s town,

Many disciples there were found.

Then back through cities where they’d been,

Strengthening each believer in,

“Through many tribulations pass

The Kingdom comes at last.”

Elders chosen with prayer and fast,

Churches built to firmly last.

Commended all unto the Lord,

Trusted in His faithful Word.

Through Pisidia they returned,

Perga once again discerned.

From Attalia sailed away,

Back to Antioch to say

All that God through them had done —

How Gentiles now had been made one.

Long they stayed with those who’d heard —

Rejoicing in the spreading Word.

Refrain

Through many trials we enter in,

Yet Christ remains our sovereign King.

Rejected, beaten, rising still —

His Gospel moves by Spirit’s will.
