Christ-Foreshadowing (Acts Lens)

Christ is revealed as:

  • The true King over political rulers
• The Deliverer of His imprisoned servant
• The One who receives glory alone
• The Sovereign Judge of prideful kings
• The Builder of a growing Church

Herod falls.
The Word grows

The Word Increased”

Herod raised his hand in rage,

Struck the Church in that dark age.

James, John’s brother, by the sword

Was killed for bearing Christ as Lord.

When he saw it pleased the crowd,

He seized Peter, chained and bound.

During Feast of Unleavened Bread,

Four squads guarded where he lay.

Between two soldiers, bound with chains,

Sentinels stood at iron gates.

But earnest prayer rose through the night,

The Church cried out with all its might.

An angel of the Lord appeared,

A light within the cell was cleared.

He struck Peter, “Rise up fast!”

Chains fell loose; they dropped at last.

“Dress yourself and follow Me.”

Past the guards silently,

Through the first and second ward,

Iron gate opened by the Lord.

Into the street they walked alone —

Then the angel left him gone.

Peter thought it but a dream,

Till the cool night air made clear the scene:

“Now I know the Lord has sent

His angel for deliverance.”

He went to Mary’s house to pray,

Mother of John called Mark that day.

A servant girl named Rhoda came,

Heard his voice and knew his name.

In her joy she left him there,

Ran inside to tell in prayer.

“You are mad,” the others cried —

“It is his angel,” they replied.

But Peter knocked until they came,

Amazed to see him freed from chains.

He told how God had brought him through,

Then left for somewhere no one knew.

Morning came — confusion spread.

The guards were questioned, then were led

Away to death by Herod’s will,

While anger in his heart burned still.

In Tyre and Sidon he appeared,

Clothed in royal robes revered.

Upon the throne he made his speech,

The people cried with voices reached:

“The voice of god and not a man!”

He did not refuse their claim.

An angel struck him where he stood —

He was eaten by worms and gone.

But the Word of God increased and spread.

From darkness life moved ahead.

Barnabas and Saul returned once more,

With John Mark from Jerusalem’s shore.

Refrain

Kings may rise and chains may bind,

But God rules over all mankind.

The Word grows strong, the Church moves on —

The risen Lord reigns on.
